lol, just ate one super ripe miracle fruit and waited a couple of minutes and ate a Surinam cherry off our hedge; NICE! Definitely reduced the resinous taste and allowed me to enjoy the fruit more. 2 would be better I am sure, but got a couple of IPAs waiting for me.

Me too! Although you have a much better chance of fruiting it in your locale.

Count me in for a cutting(s). =)

Very nicely done! You should be enjoying smoothies in no time.

This is inspiring to me, as I'm contemplating what to do with a large p. maliformis in a 7g or so, along with others. We have well over a dozen passiflora in ground, but nowhere ideal to plant more without encroaching into other stuff.

Growing 2 LZ seedlings from the same seed. Both have citrusy smelling leaves when crushed, but one of them has more complexity to the aroma as well. I like the funkier one better, but not sure which is same as the OG.

Mangoes grow roots first, when planted in ground. Can go many months, especially over winter, and not show any signs of growth above ground. Water when young, will also help wash out any excess fert.

Yes Kaz! You are correct, I like it (just from your description) and shall grow it in my garden =)

Do you eat the seeds? I save some, and eat a lot.

Thanks Scott for the clarification on lilikoi. Still mildly confused, but that helps some.

I am growing a bunch of passion fruit, but am confused as to what "lilikoi" actually is. I always thought of it as either p. laurifolia or p. quadragularis. Quad was too perfumey sweet to me and a huge aggressive vine, so it got chopped.  But I like laurifolia and grow a few edulis and/or flavicarpa, maliformis, and others. My favs so far are the edulis/flavacarpas, being sweet and sour. Playing around with some seedlings; have sampled some fruits that are quite good, with light acidity.

Have also heard it's the 2nd most vigorous plant that is the clone, lol. Good luck!

I did testing during the first flowering this year using only male appearing flowers from a 12 year old tree which is female. I was not able to pollinate itself or another female using male flowers. I hand pollinated over at least 7 days of the flowering period. No set on one tree and only a handful on the source tree. The test source tree is next to another female that I was pollinating from a grafted male.  I think the handful of fruit that set were probably from bees that carried pollen from the grafted male.

With maturity, trees appear to exhibit more diversity in flower types. When young, you may get stuck with a male or female for a while.

Important to know, thank you for posting. Glad I have 2 Luc's and some other variations. Assuming Orangey can cross with regular Luc's.

Thanks for the info everyone! Ordered the Harvest Right medium size with premier pump (oil). Didn't want to have to deal with 220 (large size plus require 220v), and don't think we need a large anyway. Mixed reviews on the oil free pump and extra $1500 cost pushed me towards oil. Saved a few bucks, wife is less stressed about it. Now, bring on the fresh mangoes!

2 - 4 weeks for shipping they say.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Hunt for the best Surinam Cherry

Have been enjoying some nice fruit off a seedling of what I believe came from Zill's Dark. Very sweet and sour, with complexity, and low to no resin depending on when picked. Still working on that.

Funny thing is, the hedge trees of Surinam cherry all around my house now taste good to me, even though there is resin to them. Seems my taste buds have changed, and now I am not disgusted by the funkiness. Still can't eat a lot of them at one time, but like nibbling on a few each day.

Be careful with the amount of sunlight, April seems extra bright. Burned a few eugenias recently.

The walking stick is awesome! Kids found a 2 - 3 inch praying mantis the other day, hope there are a bunch of them out there; first one I've seen.

I like the funky crossed flower as well. Please keep us posted on developments and other crosses.

Pickering is a good one for reliability and disease resistance.

Mmm4 is the champ to me. Wonderful mango that has proven to be more disease resistant than most other trees in our collection. Ours is covered in clean fruits, unlike many other trees that were hammered with pm. If a mid to late season coconut/pineapple mango is sought, it reigns supreme; for now.

G. de Bico seems to be a fast grower here, as far as garcinias go.

Thanks Mike, your logic makes sense, especially with a frequent need to change oil.

My wife is gonna be pissed, about the cost AND the size; and surely the noise too. I see opportunity! Probably can sneak a few more trees in while she's focused on the freeze dryer.

Thanks for the replies Mike and JR!

I was looking at HR, and was wondering about the difference between a standard pump and the oilless pump. Which one do you have Mike, and what would you recommend?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Best Home Freeze Dryer 2024
« on: March 30, 2024, 04:17:24 PM »
I hope all are having a nice weekend! I am about ready to order a freeze dryer, and am wondering what models are best to consider for a home operation. Any recommendations?

Planning on doing small batches for personal use, and sharing of course.

Using an Excalibur 9 level dehydrator, mostly for jerky, which has been great. Want to find something like that for freeze drying fruits.

Thanks for any and all ideas.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: 2024 FL Mango Season
« on: March 29, 2024, 04:30:18 PM »
The effects of pm and normal fruit drop are compounding to where it is clear some trees won't do much at all this season. Very sad, and will begin spraying next year. Ceci Love fruits have largely dropped, still have a decent crop if the rest hold. Even Glenn got hit harder than initially apparent.

Still, should be a good season here. It certainly has taught me a lot already.
