Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Growing Artocarpus Hirsutus
« on: April 02, 2022, 07:59:36 AM »
I will just add that the other big advantage of Anjili (A. hirsutus) is that it has some cold tolerance whereas tarap (marang) has none.

Please PM me what cultivars you have.

Sending people old and desiccated seeds with zero chance of germination is stealing in my book.

You're right Oscar, you don't need to steal, but you do it anyway, just the right amount that you can obviously get away with.

I contacted you about the rubbish Lacmellea seeds that you sent, you did not even bother coming up with a lie. Previously you had sent Eugenia pyriformis that were also dead, I foolishly put that down to bad luck and didn't make a fuss. I tend to just cut my losses since I am not a big time trader. And you blocked me on Facebook not even for a business complaint but because I pointed out in a thread that the nomenclature on your website is poor... so you are offended with mild corrections while being pedantic with amateurs about their occasional use of an incorrect binomial...

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Red abiu, "abiú roxo", what is that?
« on: December 24, 2021, 08:12:06 AM »
I think it is about time someone put a stop to this madness. I thought the situation would self-rectify, but instead it seems to be snowballing.

Caimito or "star apple" in buccaneer lingo is a fruit (Chrysophylum cainito) whose pericarp is purple, a dark purple, clearly not red. Maybe there is a variety out there that is red, but I have not seen it, in any that is definitely not in question for the subject of this thread.

The label of the plant is written in the Portuguese language and originates in Brazil, where indeed they often use the name "abiu roxo" for this species. But "roxo" in Portuguese translates to "purple" in English.

Where the confusion has been initiated is that OP huertasurbanas is a Spanish speaker, and in that language the similar word "rojo" means red. Felipe from Spain also seem to have fallen into the trap. This is all somewhat surprising, as I thought the Iberian languages had a fair amount of cross-cultural contact, at least for basic words like colors. I contacted huertasurbanas privately to correct the matter, but I have noticed over the years that a lot of people consider corrections some kind of personal assault on their fragile egoes. I love being corrected, for me it is about the improving accuracy, but for others they seem to become further stubborn in their ways, like it's some kind of personal vendetta. Que sera sera

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Let's Go Bondon!
« on: November 16, 2021, 06:53:03 AM »
Trying to get this slow-growing Artocarpus going. Commonly known as Bondon, it is an exception in the genus since it forms a small and low tree. Some say the fruit has a flavor better than jakfruit. Time will tell, but if you are outside of the tropics forget about fruiting this Bornean nugget.

I don't listen to Elton John. I only listen to the wise words of Helton Josue. He is the real rocket man when it comes to fast growth of cerrado species. He told me that he was surprised to learn that the secret was to never use sand as part of the substrate, even though it seems counter-intuitive to savanna soil physiology.

So goodbye yellow sand road. Sacrifice. It's the circle of life.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Madrono de monte
« on: October 17, 2021, 04:28:28 PM »
Jim, thank you for the new photo of de monte. It's good to know that there are plants in PR that are descended of your good tree that died.

I am just wondering why you never decided to replace your original tree, since your neighbor's tree is inferior? Have you gone back to the spot in the wild where you found it? Please offer such seeds again, since it is so valuable to us zonepushers to have germlines from high altitudes.

Regards

I'll admit this is highly unusual.

But the thread title should still not be ambiguous click-bait in all-caps.

I'll be bringing stone fruit, melons, papaya, and maybe blueberries.

Are you bringing blueberries just because you think you need to show proof of Vaccinium?

On reflection if I do have male and bisex flowers would that make my trees trisex trees? I some female flowers were found also then they might be quadrisex trees. But alas I think I just have male and female flowers on them.

Common figs have just female flowers, whereas caprifigs have male and female. Therefore the species is deemed to be "gynodioecious."

Perhaps some Garcinias are "androdioecious." Though the analogy is not quite the same.

Either way, you have newbies in your yard

Good info Simon.

And how far away do people normally keep their mango trees away from a vegetable garden? Because on Wikipedia I read that mangoes have "profuse, wide-spreading feeder roots and anchor roots penetrating deeply into the soil."

I have a Coconut Cream SEEDLING tree planted in-ground in climate akin to Socal. Just wondering to what size I can maintain an adult tree and whether this is done with a cincturing tool.

70
I also paid a couple weeks ago-

Maryoto specifically requested patience due to an inclement season over there- and apparently the package will have to go to the main island first before being sent out-

Very reputable seller

I still have not gotten tracking numbers, six weeks after paying. My PMs are also not being answered.

Update: I have been told seeds were sent on May 7. Hopefully will still get germinations after these delays.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Wildlife in your fruit trees ?

Yes Mike I've had similar problems in Australia.
A thylacine came to visit my ghost chilies. And to make matters worse a dingo took my baby kiwi (A. arguta).

72
Did anyone else get a tracking number? I was promised one and still have not received it after requesting it. Paid two and half weeks ago.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Re: grafting che on mulberry
« on: April 16, 2021, 02:30:49 PM »
The Maclura clade is quite isolated within Moraceae and it is certainly not closely related to mulberry (Morus spp.). So intergeneric grafting would likely fail.

In fact, che is more closely related to fig and breadnut than mulberry. Source: https://europepmc.org/article/PMC/PMC7995901

But if you want to experiment, sure, let us know the results. Maybe due to convergent evolution there is a chance it could work.

2021 Update: Flowering is now

Controlled cross-pollination of these two sorts would be ideal if you have both. I would like to buy 25 kernels.

Please PM me.
