Sale is over. Plants have been stepped up.  If you are local and still interested, some are still available for local pickup only for $6-$7 each.

Seven years ago I bought a mango tree with a Zills Dot tag but the mangos are S shaped and green with some red, fibrous, and not very good.  I am never buying another Zill tree again! (until next month, well, maybe next week)

Jay,

I think you still have a ways to go. My basis for this statement is the stem is still green.  I think it should get woody.   The color of the fruit itself should turn a bit golden.  Maybe your posted pic is not colored correctly but I would think it should have more yellowing.

Here is my post with a picture of the fruit I harvested from my rental property.  It was a little early but still great tasting.

Your conditions are atypical so any guidance you receive may be bad. Smell test or medium to severe browning of the exterior may be better indicators.

I have not been able to get a wide sampling of varieties this year but, as of today, Angie is holding the 2014 season top mango title for me.  The fruit was grown at Bender's Grove and it was about two weeks ago.  It blew away the few pickerings I have eaten this year.

Sorry for being a disbeliever, but I don't think that is jaboticaba.  When they start popping, they throw up a very fine, hair thin stem.  They are generally reddish green.

huertasurbanas has posted pictures of jaboticaba sprouting.

Where do I place my order? ;D

Tried to convince my wife we needed a dehydrator last year.  She didn't like the idea. This year, I think I will ask for forgiveness instead of permission.  I just bought one from amazon.
My tree produces 400+ mangos.  The problem is that birds, squirrels, and my beagles ruin many of them.  There is a squirrel that takes up residence in the tree during mango season.  The other problem is I get tired of the taste.  Last year I was forced to eat hundreds of these since my other trees are too young to produce and my mature keitt and haden did nothing last year.  This year the haden and keitt both have 75 to 100 but, of the young trees, only Rapoza is fruiting.

Do you have a dehydrator? All our family members have already "placed orders" for bags of dehydrated mangoes. I have no problem getting rid of anything we don't eat! There is never enough, it seems. Hence, the additional mango trees I've planted this year.

This mornings glenn haul. Picked 3 hadens too. Almost took a mango to the head falling from 25 ft. Mango picking is dangerous!!! Keep your Glenns trimmed.

Biggest almost hit 1.5 pounds.

Raja Puri Banana

Grows to 6 to 8 foot tall, withstands neglect, and is good in windy locations. Medium sized bananas that are very sweet.

Sounds like a good idea and maybe later in life it will be something I consider.  If I could magic them away into the hands of those that need them, I would do so gladly.  Picking fruit is time consuming labor.  Time is always in short supply.

I agree with Rob and Clint.  I spend more time throwing them at my banana clumps then eating them.

Maybe there is a shelter or food bank nearby that would be appreciative?

Pleasant acidity.
I am at a little bit of a loss when you say tangy.  Also, all of the black golds I have had have been anything but firm.
I have read it before, that a tree will change from soft to firm but it may not have been a credible source (I don't remember).  I wonder if it is a matter of timing the harvest. It is a good question and could spare some seedlings from a needless death is the firmness does actually change.  Better for soft haters to wait a year than 3+ for a new tree to start producing.

Brandon is right about the black gold. The first 2 years that my tree produced, they were soft. This year they are firm. Ms Ledesma also stated that they are firm. I think the thing with the black gold is that it's hard to tell when the fruit are ripe, since they don't change color like the NS1. So, if one waits for them to change color, it's probably too late (and too soft). Or, perhaps the tree doesn't start producing firm fruits until it's older?

I haven't had the bangkok lemon, but the other two (the cross and GN) are both tangy to my palate.

I have not tasted that many varieties but my ratings would go:

1) Black Gold x Tabouey - crunchy - tangy, sweet
2) Bangkok Lemon - crunchy - very tangy, sweet
3) Gold Nugget - medium firm - some tang, sweet
3 (tied with GN) Cheena - soft - excellent complex flavor
4) J31 - firm - sweet
5) Black Gold - firm - sweet
6) Mai 1 - firm - sweet

Brandon thanks for the report. How would you compare it to others you have tried as far as flavor and texture?
Ron

The fruit from this tree is excellent, top notch in both flavor and crunchiness.  PM sent!

Yesterday afternoon, after 5 days of sitting on my counter, the fruit I harvested softened and started putting out a banana odor.  I cut it this morning.  I think I grabbed it just a little early but it was still really good.  Some of the pieces of rag were excellent, better tasting than the bulbs, tangy and sweet.  Almost all the rag has some flavor, maybe 40% of the rag is good tasting.  The texture was medium firm.

On the Behind the Seeds tour at Disney Epcot, the tour guide said that, for some unknown reason, 3rd and 4th generation pineapples grown from crowns become sour and only good for canning or cooking.  Anyone else ever hear that before?

897
Here are the first two from my tree.  I still have a good sized one that is a few weeks out and 3 or 4 fresh panicles that have blueberry sized mangos on them.

Here is the weigh in

Keith, it was great to meet a neighbor!  We will have to setup a trade, veggies for whatever fruits you can't sneak a tree past your wife.

Hey Brandon,
Thanks again for the pineapples and the tour of your property this weekend. Can't wait to see how all those young trees look in the next 2 years! Nice to meet you, neighbor.
Keith

Val and Jexton, I am glad your plants arrived safe and sound.

I was busy doing some potting myself.

Jeff, funny you should mention... stay tuned for different varieties coming sssooooooonnnnnnnn!!!
Oh, and if you want some elite gold plants, I could sell you some of the ones I potted up since you are local.

I read that for GN, picking time and time allowed for ripening can affect the firmness but it will probably also affect the flavor.

That UF doc is the reason I picked GN when I had only room for a single Jak tree.

Jeff, instead of cleaning in a single sitting, I cut into sections that will fit in a 1 gal ziplock bag.  When hungry, my wife and I grab a bag and clean and eat as a single step.  Since the fruit is cold, the latex stickiness is nullified.

Awesome job Jay!  This is the year of the gold nugget.
