Tropical Fruit Discussion / Help me with Jackfruit Flowers
« on: February 25, 2020, 08:08:39 PM »
These flowers always confuse me. One or two look female and one looks male, but I’m never positive. Also, each one has what looks like another flower not far behind soon to emerge. I don’t want to miss my pollination window this year on this tree as I have yet to taste this unknown variety. What should I be doing right now ????

Please message me. I’ll pay and send you a shipping label. Thank you!

Hey guys, I know this is not fruit related, but since there is a lot of knowledge on this forum, I figured someone might be able to help. I live in South Miami and my home has a tower type entrance. My wife and I want to plant a thick vine that grows like ivy that will climb and cover the tower.  Something dense and vigorous (yes I understand frequent maintenance will be mandatory).  I see these vines many placed down here but don't know the names of the plant.  Does someone here have experience with these in the South Florida area and can recommend cultivars??? Thank You.

I’ve got some year old garcinias that is like to give a little nudge to their painfully slow growth rate. Is foliar fertilizer safe for them? Recommended or not? And if recommended, any particular brands ??

Tropical Fruit Discussion / VIDEO: Sweettart Mango Fruiting Year 2
« on: April 28, 2019, 08:42:37 PM »
Now I know Sweettart is supposed to be a fairly heavy bearer, but just to give people hope for trees they have that may have fruited poorly this year or last at a decent size. This particular tree in the below video had only one mango on it last year at about 7ft tall. This year at between 8 and 9ft, it’s holding somewhere between 60-70 mangos. They are pretty well distributed, except for one branch which I had to support.  Anyway, enjoy the video...I didn’t narrate however

Please help. Maybe eggs of something? Appeared out of nowhere

I love this fruit.  Tasted it at Fruit and Spice a few years ago and its very refreshing and unique; tastes like a slightly sour peach (and looks and feels like a small peach as well) for those not familiar with it.

I received a bunch of seeds from Ebay and they are all sprouting rather quickly.  But these typically need a male and female plant to set decent amounts of fruit. I have multiple sprouts in single pots and I don't want to dig them out and separate them. Is this a good strategy to possible bundle males and females together is this going to be a problem in the future?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Should I cut this Mamey down in height ??
« on: April 11, 2019, 04:42:36 PM »
This pantin (key west) mamey is growing very vertical. Does anyone see any disadvantage to cutting about 3 or 4 feet off of the top? I’d like it to grow more symmetrical

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Is this a Jackfruit forming ???
« on: April 11, 2019, 04:40:01 PM »
I’m not sure. Looks odd and photos I’ve seen online seem to make me think this is a baby jackfruit just starting out. But I’m skeptical since I did not spot any female flowers on the tree this year and it’s still youngZ what do you think? To be honest I don’t recall what they look like when they just start to form

I have two star apple trees, one purple and one green, but I rather like the taste of the purple better. I’d like to graft my purple variety onto my existing green variety tree. Is there any special technique or time frame? Is it difficult to graft this species? Thank you

I’m in Mysore on business and want to locate a rare fruit market. Any ideas! What do you think I can find here this time of year? I’d like to try to find something exotic,  not mango or jackfruit. Sanrio, durian, mangosteen, etc.  On the slim chance that someone has been here, any recommendations? Also going down to Ooty for a day. Thanks! -Jon

Tropical Fruit Discussion / How to select Annona bud wood for grafting??
« on: November 23, 2018, 09:31:06 AM »
I’ve searched both here and YouTube, but I have not found any info on how to ‘select’ budwood from an existing tree and graft it onto another semi-mature existing tree. I have one very healthy custard apple tree that was grown from seed and it has the most sub-par taste out of all of my annonas. I want to graft one of my better tasting custard apples onto it

Citrus General Discussion / Do Oranges Have to be Culled?
« on: October 29, 2018, 05:17:39 PM »
I have a blood orange tree that has set over 100 fruit each of the past 2 years.  The tree is only about 7ft tall and 5ft wide.  Both years, no fruit gets full size.  They all end up either aborting early, or ripening on the tree at a small size and then dropping.  Do I need to cull these next year? Tree appears healthy.  I bought the tree as a 15gal and it had one large fruit on it, so I know its supposed to be a larger fruit. They are Sanguinelli variety (?sp)

Anyone out there with trees 3ft or larger PM me. Thanks!! -Jon
