pics of grafted Mamey in the Yucatan
« on: June 12, 2012, 03:19:28 PM »
Here is a Mamey I bought in Hunucma for $2.50 and that's expensive because I didn't want to go to the Ayuntamento were the fruit trees (many grafted) are FREE to all residents. It looks like they used an Omega grafting tool and decapitated the scion. What do the experts think? The kid that sold it to me didn't know anything about grafting.

Yes simple cleft graft on third photo. But second photo does look like the scion forked and one part was decapitated.

Looks like a cleft with a non-terminal scion.

Looks very good.  Impressive, in fact.  Very different technique from the veneers I saw in Yucatan in the 1990's.

Means that who ever grafted it, just chopped off a branch from a mature tree, tipped it, and grafted it onto the root stock. The terminal is what is normally used which includes the tip from where the leaves develop from (aka terminal bud). A terminal graft would look like this:

Another example of a terminal grafted mamey would be the mamey's Mr. Clean purchased.

Good luck with your new mamey tree!  :)
