Please help me to ID this Passiflora
« on: December 01, 2016, 08:33:21 AM »
I harvested this "strange" passion fruit from my vines of the common edulis (red) and flavicarpa (yellow) types.
The fruit looked a little bit weird, oval shape with a hard "carton-like" skin whose colour is something between golden-yellow-lightbrown-pink
Thep pulp was of a yellow-orange colur definitely very sweet with a great flavour.
Unfortunatley I ate everything before deciding to take some pics and maybe save some seeds.
As I noticed wen i cut the fruit, the section shape of the rind was not round but hexagonal.
What variety could it be??

Interesting. I don't have the answer. You said it tasted sweet, but I would think most people wait for the skin to show more dried/wrinkle before consuming.

Odd. Passiflora fruit does have a tendency towards hexagonal symmetry.
viz Passiflora citrina:

By chance would your vines be growing on anything hexagonal which might have molded the shape, are other fruits normal?

No nothing that might explain the shape.
The vines are growing free on a wide trellis.
And YES the taste was very sweet.
The flavicarpa i usually harvest are definitely sour so i usually squeeze them on a slice of papaya to enjoy the sweet and sour contrast.
this one i could easily eat alone.
Not a passiflora citrina, very different.
It's a mistery.
If ever another fruit will appear i will try to follow the vine in that tangle of branches until i understand from which plant is produced :-)

Could be but the shell was not so hard as it should be, Just like a carton i could easily cut it with a knife.
And also leaves have 3 lobes and not just one
