Brown splotches on avocado (Monroe) leaves... what are these?
« on: January 19, 2017, 08:00:34 PM »
No idea if this is normal or if something is going on with this tree. It seems healthy to me and appears to be sending out flowers, but want to know if these brown splotches all over are a problem.

Had the exact same problem on my Oro negro, was worrying me but then the problem resolved on its own as those leaves fell off and new ones grew in.

Good to know. My Lula, Day and Wurtz have some of that going on, and I was wondering if I was over- or under-watering. They dont have as many partially brown leaves as the Monroe in the photo, but enough to be unsettling.

I just assumed it was fungal but I have no real reason to assume that. I think there were black specs on the underside of the splotches that I spotted before. I have it on my Bacon and my friend has it across many cultivars at his house. All the trees are very heavily mulched and neither of us spray fungicide.

I had the same thing on my leaves. I was told it was http://entnemdept.ufl.edu/creatures/fruit/avocado_lace_bug.htm

Although I can not see the underside of your leaves. Thats where the tiny bugs are.

At this time of the year as the leaves are getting ready to change this happens. Regardless of the source I never treat and in a few weeks all new leaves would come out and the problem is gone.

Probably old damage from lacebugs, under the leaves---  the bugs are not likely there anymore.

Next time you see it starting, you can spray the undersides of the leaves with a hose pistol.  Yes, water sprayed very forcefully is a pesticide.

Or you can spray gently with insecticidal soap or with neem oil, etc.
