I can't be there, but I'd sure like to ask her if they've added the new Zill Mangos to their Fairchild collection and what she thinks of them (since she's an expert).  Ed, can you ask her?

Theyve grown many if not most of
Them but under numerical designations. So they aren't familiar with a lot of the weird names that get slapped on
Them.

If you get a chance, ask her if Fairchild will be releasing any new varieties at the sale this July.

Like maybe Kryptonite  or  ?

You can promise her that we won't tell anyone.

Well, it looks very G rated.   ;)
Just kidding.
But here is a video of someone else who took a 1 hr and 36 minute video of her talk --- Dr. Noris Ledesma spoke at the Suncoast Tropical Fruit and Vegetable club in Nokomis, Florida on February 10th, 2016.

Maybe the girls  and others on the forum deciding to go or not might want to watch this.

She will also be speaking in Nokomis, FL Feb 8th which is a little further north for those members closer.

I will be attending this event as I prepare to grow many mangos on my farm.

She may have a bigger role at Fairchild since Richard Campbell announced his departure for the commercial mango industry.

She spoke to the Redlands group at the fruit and spice park last year and focused on her breeding program to develop disease resistant hybrids.

Just curious,  but is there a commercial mango industry in Florida?  I know there are some farms, orchards, and people sell fruit.   but I mean commercial operations like with Avocados.    I have yet to see locally grown mangoes in Publix.   maybe they have had them,  just have never come across them personally.

Yes. The state Only a has a couple thousand acres in total though.

I believe there used to be more commercial mango operations in Florida. Competition from other countries hurt. And there were opportunities for farmers to sell their land to developers.

There also used to be more kids selling mangos in front of their homes. I remember seeing Hadens and Keitts and Kents for a buck each. (I've been in Florida a long time.)

I never see Florida mangos in supermarkets  :-[
And the produce markets near me have the gall to sell Mexican mangos, even in July.

The company is called Ciruli Brothers. They import more than Mango but I assume that will be his focus?

Judging from their website and their base in AZ, it looks like they are strictly importers of mangos (Ataulfo, Kent, and Keitt).  Maybe R. Campbell will be advising and assisting their growers in other countries, predominantly Mexico?

He's already been consulting for them for a while.

On the topic of Florida mangos in major supermarket chains, I can recall seeing some Homestead-grown mangos at Publix, but that was 10 years ago. But for the most part it's impractical due to the volume demanded by these large chains, coupled with many "small" growers preferring to retail their crop.

Many smaller markets and produce resellers will carry Florida mangos however. I supply Bedner's in Delray and West Boynton for example.

Yeah, I don't see how Florida could ever be a major supplier of mangos to supermarkets.  The acreage isn't there, and the volume would be impossible to achieve.  It's not like citrus, and even the citrus industry isn't what it once was and is shrinking by the year.

Or at least it gets reconstructed to benefit small farmers that could provide better quality products to our local markets.  Sorry to deviate from thread topic.

With Sonny Perdue as Secretary of Agriculture, it's all corporate agribusiness, which has destroyed family farms.  Nothing will ever be done for the little guys.  Democratic picks for Agriculture Secretary have been just as bad.  Sorry to bring up politics.
