Big Island / Kauai folks... tourist questions
« on: January 29, 2017, 09:27:09 AM »
Not really tropical fruit related (unless someone wants to give the family a tour of their fruit tree paradise), but we're trying to plan a trip to Big Island and Kauai in July or August this year. I've got points burning a hole in my pocket and the kids/wife really want to go.

Looking for suggestions from the local experts on places to see, things to do, where to eat - local knowledge is better than internet reviews. We'll probably be there for 7 - 10 days. Looks like we'll stay at Hilton Waikoloa Village on Big Island (seems to have a ton of stuff to do for the kids and my son loves water slides). No idea about Kauai at this point. Would love to gorge myself on fruit while there too, though I assume my wife/kids are more interested in volcanoes/beaches. Any suggestions appreciated.

If not appropriate for this forum, feel free to PM me.

Aloha. I could offer a botanical adventure into the bush near my stomping grounds. We are located on the East side.

The farmer's market (I think on Thursdays) is a recommendation.

That was where I first saw Dragon Fruit.

East Big Island related recommendations:

Makuu Market near Pahoa on Sundays
Uncle Robert's Night Market, Wednesday nights in Kalapana
Hilo Market, Wednesdays and Saturdays
Hilo Arboretum - Not all the trees are labeled very well, but it's a free self guided tour with some rare fruit trees
Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden - Just north of Hilo

You should definitely visit the Breadfruit Institute at the National Tropical Botanical Garden in Kauai: http://ntbg.org/breadfruit/

This comes up every time somebody is visiting Hawaii. Could be an FAQ. Look here:

Hi friend from Kona Fruit farm could I hit you up for a tour? I am visiting the big island for 3 weeks in March / April and staying in  Waikoloa and would love to visit.

I can try bring some seeds from Australia for you as a payment! Let me know what your after and I will see if is in season. March is the main fruiting season here.

And Chupa King can I give you a holla if I get over your side of the Island? Nice of you both to offer.

This is my place

I would certainly. I could also show you around our young food forest. We have quite a collection on one acre that is quickly growing. Our expansion with 3 acres is going to have huge potential.
