Where to get sulfate of potash locally?
« on: March 03, 2017, 07:06:10 PM »
Any ideas? Looks like online it's around $70 for a 50lb bag. Wondering if any better locally.

Universal Supply

I tried to find that place once, ended up surrounded by huge semi-trucks in the middle of a bunch of warehouses, chickened out and went home. I'm sure it's where I was, but I was getting a bit claustrophobic.

It's a bit hard to find. You have to go way into the back. But call ahead to ensure they have it, because they don't always carry that.

I'm not sure sulfate of potash is a good idea though, unless you're mixing it with other products. Too much K can create a Mg deficiency. And your trees will want a good micronutrient package. Lastly, sulfate of potash will disappear in a couple of rains.

My recommendation would be something like Har's 0-3-16, which has micros, slow release K, and Mg.

Universal Supply in Pompano/ Broward County is in the rear so just find the address and drive in 200ft

Give them a call because maybe they have the granular pure potassium sulfate again. It was $25 for 50lbs which was a great deal. Last time they only had the quick dissolve kind which was more expensive. I bought some. This will work but you waste time applying a little bit each month during the mango trees active months of March through December. I sprinkle  the quick kind on top of the mulch hoping some chelates into the mulch so stays longer.

Please post here if they have the granular  K again.

Potassium increases crop yields because it:

Increases root growth and improves drought tolerance
Builds cellulose and reduces lodging
Activates at least 60 enzymes involved in growth
Aids in photosynthesis and food formation
Helps translocate sugars and starches
Produces grains rich in starch
Increases protein content of plants
Maintains turgor, reduces water loss and wilting
Helps retard the spread of crop diseases and nematodes.

You would probably be better served by buying Sulfate of Potash-Magnesia, also known as "K-Mag" or Sul-Po-Mag, 0-0-22.

This is coarse-granular, cheap, doesn't wash away instantly, and prevents overpowering of Magnesium from applying too much Potassium.
