Marang in Brisbane!
« on: March 22, 2017, 03:28:07 PM »
Hey!

Does anyone know of any Marang varieties that don't mind the subtropics so much? Would be greatly appreciated if someone knew if they survived in Brisbane, perhaps?

Thanks!

They can take some high 30s in temps probably not to many hours.Had one fruiting in plastic covered house for a few years till 150 mph winds took that away.fun times

I was thinking along the lines of it getting too cold here.

He was also thinking in terms of coldness... Americans use the Fahrenheit temperature scale...
Eugenia luschnathiana = CURUIRI.    Talisia esculenta = PITOMBA
I do not recommend people deal with Fruit Lovers, Prisca Mariya or Fernando Malpartida

No they wont survive. Mackay would be about the last place along the Queensland coast where they would have a shot.Frequent dips below 7c and days that don't make 20c would not them around and the lack of humidity would be too hard to cope with. They are only a little more cold tolerant than mangosteen and that is even philipine varieties.kwai muk is a better artocarpus option. They can take cat 5 winds with management but maybe only cat 3 without. 150mph would not always wipe them out but above 200mph there is not much that can be done, even Tatura.Thankfully cat 5 winds are rare.

We already have Kwai Muk. Never had an issue in the 15 years here. Never cared for it once. Seems to be a decent amount of Fruit on it this year.

I'm just wondering what sort of Artocarpus will survive in Brisbane. :)

A.lakoocha and A.nanchuaensis might be two good candidates and keledangs range to high altitude so some varieties and lines would be worth a try.

Would you know where to purchase some? I've looked but not found!
