A 3rd mango bloom?
« on: April 03, 2017, 11:46:08 AM »
I have a third mango bloom, presumably induced by that chill we had here in South FL a couple of weeks ago. Right now, I have large mangoes from the first bloom (Nov of last year), tiny mangolettes from the bloom of about a month ago, and newly emerging blooms -- all on the same trees! This is going to be a very long mango season :-).

In 12 years of mango growing, I don't ever remember having mango blooms emerging in April. And I certainly don't recall having blooms spanning a 5 - 6 month period (Nov - Apr).

While I'm still waiting for one complete or nearly bloom on any of my trees, one of the branches on my NDM is pushing flowers.
Most of the ndm tree is still dormant, got a hand full of branches that have little fruits.

I wouldn't mind a 3rd bloom on some of my trees. I normally get good fruit set/retention (with some spraying) on Dot. This year it is terrible. Also terrible on young Cac and quite poor on Dupuis Saigon, which is otherwise very healthy.

Edgar has had modest fruit set on 3/4 of the tree. The remaining quarter, which fruited very heavily last year, has died back a bit, and did not bloom.

After taking a year off Sweet Tart bloomed and set fruit like a champ. Is it, perhaps, the perfect mango? Good flavor and production, kind of precocious, and some disease resistance?

Young PPK set fruit nicely on the first bloom. I thinned the fruit, as I read somewhere that there should be more leaves than mangos..................

Our Glenn has 6 nice sized mangos on it (one looks almost ripe), and now there are probably 200+ little mangos scattered all over it. Hoping for a 3rd bloom! Cold front is coming

No real cold front coming to SFla.  One night in upper 50s with all other nights in mid 60s (as of current forecast) is not enough to trigger another bloom.

Well this gives me a touch of hope.  My overall flowering/fruit set has been abysmal.  A few trees doing OK, (ice cream great FWIW) but mostly a complete bust.

At this point zero flowers on :
Fairchild  (8 y.o)
Nam doc mai (8 y.o.)
Heidi (8 y.o.)
Cogshall (8 y.o.)
Haden (established)
Glenn ( established)
PPK (6 y.o.)
Val Carrie ( 5 y.o.)
Val Pride (established - has a date with my chainsaw)

Very limited on :

1 LZ  ( my other LZ on Tebow/young intergraft doing great)
1 CC ( my other CC on Tebow/young intergraft doing great)
Angie
Carrie

Wow! I felt lucky when mine bloomed twice.

My Nam Doc Mai does look like it's going to have a pretty long season.

I see some spotty third bloom on some trees. Fairchild, Carrie, Pina Colada. Actually for the Fairchild this is its first bloom but going on now.
Other trees have not bloomed at all and will not this year unless things really get crazy. I think they will compensate and really produce next year.

As far as these third bloom mangoes getting nice and ripe...... I have to think they will. It's just that kind of year.

Third bloom for Mallika, Sweet Tart and Lemon Meringue as well in my yard. Not nearly as heavy as the second bloom though.

Ugly Betty is a champion in my yard. Always the first to bloom, and now has the heaviest third bloom. Production is not the heaviest, but does well with spraying. Not the prettiest mango, but love the taste.

I think I'm going to like that one!  Grafted last year, heavy bloom and fruit set on a robust ST tree.  Very precocious.

Can't believe you guys get blooms in November!   You feeding them Wheaties or sumtin?

No, just Florida.  December is usually the first consistent month for blooming, if you take away a few select varieties and certain micro locations, however each year's weather can have an effect if we get odd blooms un November or not until January.

The 3rd bloom was a couple few weeks before the weather forecast I was referring to in my post above.  See the original post in the thread by the cookie man.

I have lost count with my Ice cream,  in container, pushes flowers a few times. 3, 4, more not sure,  but not holding anything,   doubt it will, been having rain here almost every day.

This is not just a Florida issue.    trees around here in the DR are doing the same,  I see trees with large, small, BBs, and flowers it's crazy.    many of those cold fronts did make it down here, and we had weeks in the low 60's , some stalled on top of us.  I remember seeing warmer temps in Fla than here on many nights.

Same here in Venezuela and no cold fronts to speak of, but several unseasonal rains (should be the dry season, not a drop). Many trees have flowers and several sizes of fruit simultaneously.
