what was she saying about the shoulders of the mango, when she was squeezing the fruit?

She was explaining the correct time to harvest the fruit, as soon as the shoulders are full/wide, ( Mature green )  she also mentions that Kesar taste better if ripened off the tree instead of on the tree,  so I guess its like Mallika in that sense.  Noris says that Kesar picked in India is not refrigerated but instead kept in warm grass/hay (paja) huts to ripen before selling.

I wonder if doing this brings out the color.

Yes, ripening like they do in India will bring out the exterior color so long as it was picked the mature stage of green.   Many Indian mangoes are said to be best when harvested this way.  Oh, and ripening in camel dung and hay mixture is best.  Anyone hot a camel??

Never put a mango in the fridge unless it is fully ripe.  In any event, mangoes are best if never refrigerated,  they should be sated at room or outdoor temperature.

Wow TD - thought jumbo kesar look incredible....
My soil sounds similar to that in the DR - sandy
and gravely.  It's just that our temps soar in
the summer.

And it's funny, my Kent is doing fine - slow growing
but big beautiful delicious fruit....

Gary

Gary, if you listen to the video the landscape is very similar to our climate in the LA basin. Coachella Valley is extremely arid like Sahara Desert with low humidity we are now enjoying June Bloom with 50-60% humidity  an average temp in the low 80's. I have a Kesar which I will plant this week we will see the results in three years.

Any reports of fruiting Kesar in Florida?  When I went back through, some members were awaiting fruit in 2012.

Just wanted to mention that the Kesars I ate this year, shipped from India had an average Brix of 19%. This is a pretty high average. I really love this mango but I like Lemon Zest more.

I received a few from my potted kesars in 2012 and 2013. They were really good, a complex flavor. Deep orange flesh.

I never reported my 2014 results on Kesar and with good reason.  My tree never set any fruit this year.  I did not spray and bloom was rather light and only on some branches. The jury is still very much out on this cultivar as far as South Florida growing....at least at my house.

Mine held 4 fruits to maturity this last season. Only a small % of the canopy bloomed though. I did spray fungicide.

Flavor was actually unimpressive, but I only got to try 2 of the fruit and one may have been harvested prematurely.

Agree with Harry that the jury is still out on this one. My tree is large enough to carry a decent sized crop next season so we'll see what happens.

Alex - are you a fan of Mallika?  Was the Kesar properly  ripened  to make a fair  comparison?

I like Mallika but don't love it. One of them was definitely ripened properly and they don't taste similar. Kesar had a more complex spice note, but Mallika would have beaten it in a taste test.

First fruits this particular tree held to maturity so I'm not going to pass judgement yet; want to see how it turns out next season.

What a blessing to see the video and information of the Kesar Mango. I love the way the ended the video with such kind comments about the island, people and the treatment of love. Thank you for all sharing.

Good question, Jeff.  I bought it from you. My best guess is that it is 3 years in ground.  I don't think it is less than 2, nor more than 4.  But, I could be wrong.

I met a master gardener at my local fruit growers meet in Naples few months back, he had some Kesars at that time. I will PM you his contact information. I was about to buy one from him, but then I got a 15G from "Cookie Monster".

My Kesar has a pannicle powdery mildew problem. Anyone elses?

My Kesar, which I got from Jeff in 2013, flowered and fruited for the first time last year. It looked very promising to begin with, but the mangoes stopped growing after a while and I ended up with a few tiny fruits. They were really good though, in terms of taste.

I have flowers and tiny mangoes this year as well. I do not see any powdery mildew problems.

The tree is a vigorous grower.

I'm hoping to get one of these later in the year.
So just curious how's the season so far for those with a Kesar?
