Are all "Elaeagnus" species nitrogen fixers ?
« on: May 22, 2017, 12:16:43 AM »
So I was wondering are all "Elaeagnus" species nitrogen fixers ?
I know Goumi (Elaeagnus multiflora) is a nitrogen fixing plant but I was just wondering if other species in the Elaeagnus genus are too such as Elaeagnus philippinensis and Elaeagnus commutata it would make them even better as additions to a food forest along with the nitrogen fixing legume species

So shan, Elaeagnus latifolia, is also nitrogen fixing. BTW, the So shan fruit also has much bigger fruit than goumi.

aren't they all pretty much temperate, in need of chill hours to fruit?

I have E.  x Ebbingei and it had a ton of fruit.
im in New Orleans zone 9b. very few chill hours.

There are a couple that are native to more tropical weather.

i am almost positive they all fix N.

If you scroll to the bottom of this page
it will list the species, with detailed info on each one.

Do sell seeds. Not fruiting at the moment, but sometime during this summer. Go ahead and order and they are sent as soon as available.
I can also send cuttings, but found them hard to start from cuttings.
