Fertilizing annonas
« on: May 22, 2017, 01:24:40 PM »
I'm starting to build a nice collection of annonas and I'm interested in any advice of good fertilizer blends, frequency, and best times to fertilize. I ran a few searches in here but haven't found much. I haven't hurt anything yet but I've just been using a very light dose of 10-10-10.

Any insight into different species preferences appreciated as well. I've got a few sugar apples, Rollinia's, soursop, atemoya, custard apple, and Guanabana de Monte. I want to treat these babies right.

Use Bioflora, its a special blend of chicken manuare fertilizer that does wonders for Anonas. Crop Production Services carry it, if not, you can ask them to order fro you. A 50lb bag I blieve sells for around $35/$40. its all organic.

If you want to put chicken waste on your trees, its much cheaper to buy 25lb bags of composted chicken manure.

Thanks for posting the formulation. It looks like a great product. I wonder if some of the farm ag supply stores in my area might carry it ?  The search starts now 😊

This is an excellent formula. We use it to raise our young grafted anonas. Two years later they'll be 20-25' and very productive and you can purchase Bioflora online or your local horticulture store.

I've got a bunch of white cherimoya seedlings started for rootstock in gallon cans. I was using osmocote but I want to really push them so that their ready for grafting when you start selling scions again. Some are pencil size and a little smaller . Scott Van der kar just emailed me a couple of days ago that he was sending me around 400 white seed.  I should have plenty of rootstocks in the not too distant future.

Thanks for the info, I was totally unaware of Crop Production Services. There are a couple fairly close to me. Do their stores sell retail or only wholesale?

The Anaheim location is for wholesale but the Temecula is for both

Anaheim caters to retail as well, just that you dont get 10% discount, but always ask for one, I always get 10-20% depending on what I am buying.

JF says that Bioflora is a excellent product to grow young anonnas and I don't doubt him.  Is this product equally as good for mature cherimoyas , sugar apple , atemoya, soursop , Etc in comparison to say osmocote  ?  I've got some trees that will eventually be in 48 inch tree boxes and was wondering how well this would work for specimens this large ?

I have a freshly planted soursop (about a month 1/2 in ground) and it has already grown about 3-5 inches all around with lots of 6 inch new branches popping out all over and leaves that are much larger than The old ones. I planted it in a mixture of sand, 2 pounds of worm castings, 2 pounds of azomite, and about a half a bag of Kellogg's organic gro mulch which is composted rice hulls, recycled forest products (wood chips) arbor fines, composted cow and chicken manure, gypsum, and feather meal. I mixed that in with native soul and used it as mulch along with mycorrhizae around the root ball and lots of yard waste as mulch on top. I fertilize with Alaska fish fertilizer and seaweed extract by Growmore every 3 weeks and foliage spray every 2 weeks with the seaweed extract and chelated iron from southern ag. The foliage spray has made a huge difference in the leaves and the tender new branch growth.

  JF and Behl

I have not been able to find a source for the bio flora.  I thought that I had found a source in Fresno but after a few days the lady at crop production services called and said that it looked like the order had been canceled, something about regulation changes. Not sure if this is going to be available anymore. Probably going to have to find something similar. I did buy a bag of the Kellogg fruit tree fertilizer which has similar ingredients and it has given decent results. Just applied some to some young cherimoya seedlings last weekend so I'll watch to see how they respond to it.

Be sure any fertilization program, on deficient soil, includes plenty of Calcium, Boron (measured per reputable recommendations, to avoid excess), and Zinc.

I'm growing them in a nursery mix that I buy locally . It is made up of sand / fir bark . I usually add worm castings, some Azomite, mychorrizea , and a small amount of osmocote whenever I repot any of my plants. Just started using this Kellogg fert. Last weekend so it's too early to tell how it's going to work. In addition to this I also foliar feed with micro nutrients. In your opinion would the foliar feeding add enough of the calcium / boron ? The plants look really healthy.

actually most fertilizers would do the trick, the goal is to keep rotating so it doesnt get build up. In fertilizers, I have learned that less is more. that being said, I need to fertilize mine as I haven't done that in past 12 months, ouch
