Pouteria glomerata ( ex hypoglauca ) - Cinnamon apple .
« on: June 03, 2017, 05:59:25 PM »
This does not grow wild in my area but further south ( Oaxaca , Yucatan etc..) Can anybody tell me , how do I know when the fruit is ripe , some say it doesn't turn yellow and must fall by itself from the tree , a friend send me a few ( Fedex ) and said they would be ripe on arrival . Look at the pic ...to me they are not ripe yet ...probably the seeds will be ready but I am afraid to screw up and also get a bad impression about the fruit itself ( if still unripe ) What do you folks think ?

It s true about the flavor, i tryed once i guess no mature and flavor was so so, when ripe is an enjoyable  experience.  When ripe flesh turn more yellow and soft.

It's funny.  They can start to split on the tree.  I think that they should kind of split open when you squeeze them if they are ready.  I don't have enough experience with them to pick before they really show signs of ripeness.  They are not in production at my farm but I do seek them out at CATIE, near Doug.

Peter....refresh my memory. Is cinnamon apple what's called here pan de vida? If it is, at least I like the name. LOL The fruit's not much to get excited about. Pretty tree though!

Well ..my friend who send me the fruits told me : " Don't listen to all these guys about fruit splitting etc.....eat them NOW " I did and was very pleasantly surprised , I did put them in the fridge first , I like my fruits cold , I am as you all know not very good at describing flavors but the closest I can come is : A sorbet with a not very pronounced , delicate and delicious mango flavor . Bottom line , I'll plant the seeds .

Hi

To me they have a touch of pineapple in flavor.

The seeds take many months to geminate, I planted in October and they germinated in April of this year.

Anyone have any luck grafting these on Canistel? I tried it as an Abiu rootstock but it didn't take. This would be a nice addition to a Canistel multigraft for us people with limited space.

These seeds are hard as a rock , did anybody ever tried to crack them ( hammer needed ) to let water in and speed up germination ?

The bush was bought at the fruit and spice plant sale and started the tree from seed.

I did crack some of mine, didn't notice any difference in germination time and growth.
They are easily damaged when cracking, luckily it happened only on the edges.

I have seen a small orchard situation of cinnamon apple and the trees were t. It, maybe the size of canistel trees. 5-6 meters high. I would plant them at about 6-7 meters spacing based on what I e seen. This has been a slow grower for us.
