HELP: Jujube tree problems
« on: July 25, 2017, 10:53:00 AM »
Hello, anyone here knows if Li Jujube really need Lang Jujube to produce lots of fruits? I have a big Lang tree and I don't really like this type and planned on replacing it with the Sugar Cane Jujube. I have 2 Li Jujube trees.

Also, this year my Jujube trees have very soft fruits on the trees. I mean the fruits still on the trees now and when I hold onto it, it's soft and not hard or like those crunchy type like how I had it last year. Last month I have tons of fruitlets on these trees, but somehow, it dropped a lot of fruits. I deep water it every 2-3 days, but last year it watered less. Wonder if I water too much? Thanks

Some Jujube needs a pollinator to produce the most fruit. If the other types of jujubes flower at the same time
they would work. I have read there are some types that fruit at different times and their flowering may not
be at the same time which would inhibit the cross pollination. Jujube are very prolific producers and are being planted
in third world countries with poor soil and irrigation because they are not very demanding. Over watering may be
the cause of your soft fruit. I watered heavy one winter and the fruit ripened very quickly and I grow the Indian
thornless type and when the fruit turns brown it is not edible. The next year I watered much less and the fruit
still ripened in a very short window. There were 500 fruit all ripe in 7-14 days.

Fang you have seen my tree, i water it when the leaf buds start to swell again in the middle of the bloom stage and again when the fruit is part. developed Jim Neitzel thinks it might be the best in town

i have a Li, a Sherwood , a Coco and another un-named (not Lang)
and my Li produced a couple in Spring, and is just starting to flower again.

As far as water...
i think Juju is a lot more drought tolerant than most people think.
Or, there is some misleading info out there.

Last year, we went 2 months in the Summer with less than 1/2 inch of rain.
i think i misted the leaves and mulch layer a couple of times
but, certainly did not deep-water it.
it had no problem fruiting and holding on to the fruit.
it was fairly new and small, so there was not a lot, but ,
lack of water did not seem to effect it.

Ziziphus — a Multipurpose Fruit Tree for Arid Regions
Abstract. The progressive desertification in many semiarid regions of the world
increases the need for plants that can cope with arid environments and meet
peoples' requirements for food, fodder and fuel. Species of fruit trees in the genus
Ziziphus represent examples of such mUltipurpose plants with great potential for
selection and use in drought-prone regions.

Irrigation: One of the outstanding qualities of the jujube tree are its tolerance of drought conditions. Regular watering, though, is important to assure a quality fruit crop.

We need more input on this to figure out what the best way to water is. I'd like to save on water if I can. Having more reports can let us see a pattern.

One important thing is the age/size of the tree. Patrick's tree has been there for decades? It's huge and the roots probably found ground water. My tree was planted this winter with a gallon-sized rootball and 5 ft tall with 2 dozen fruits developing normally.

I'm thinking 3-5 year old trees would be a good reference point.
