Passiflora spacing
« on: July 25, 2017, 03:18:45 PM »
Ive got 100ft of 6ft tall fence I am going to put passion fruit on.  I picked up a few different ones at the nursery and the spacing recommendation is different on each one ranging from 6ft to 15ft spacing.

What do you guys think?  Depends on the variety or they pretty much all get the same size?  Am I going to regret planting these things for any reason?

I think you could get by with 2 plants on each end. If you decided not to have passion fruits anymore, they could be a pain to clean up though.

I used one plant to cover my 20x10 nursery for shade. In 18 months the roof is ready to collapse from the weight (I would estimate it at 200+lbs, maybe more). I did not plan for it to weigh so much.

How tight is the fence? How much wind do you get?  Wind gusts are going to cause the fence to act like a sail. If I remember right you are at the top of a hill. If its built solid it should not be a problem.

Passiflora grows very quickly, and will easily support 20+  feet in either direction. The weight has an issue, and if trees are close to the fence it will crawl over the neighboring trees slowing suffocating them.

Constant maintenance and trimming too.  Loves water, lots of water.

Hey Im already regretting it lol.  I also wonder if deer will eat it.  Deer will be on the outside of the fence.  We get lots of wind here you are right.  Santa Ana winds on top of the hill can gust in the 30 and 40mphs.

The fence is beefy 5 or 6 row horse corral with 2"x4"x6' wire on it.  It will hopefully take the wind.  But I may need to reinforce the footings it a bit.  Good call on the wind issue.  Thanks

Space them at least 25' apart as each one is easily capable of growing that long in one year (once established).

Yeah, 20 to 25 feet is pretty much what you'll need to use for spacing. I understand they do not live more than a few years, well at least mine didn't and the dead vines made excellent kindling for my fire pit.
