Multiple rootstock jackfruit
« on: July 27, 2017, 09:41:53 AM »
I m trying my first experiment of a muti-rootstock grating-
I decided to start with a jackfruit since according to other members it seems easier than other species and also i've several seeds available for experimenting.
I planted 3 jackfruit seeds close to each other in a pot and i grafted them after about 2 months.

This is how they looked my 3  seedling 20 days after a double grafting

This is a detail of the 2 grafted areas

Today, after 35 days from grafting  I completely removed the PET tape and cut the two "sacrifical" seedlings top leaving just one.

Here a detail of the 2 graftings

Very much surprisingly (for my grafting skills) it seems they have both taken!  :)
A huge thanks to all member of forum for suggestions and inspiration especially to Kevin and Simon.
My next step is to try this with a mixed jackfruit-chempedak
Hopefully the jackfruit root system will help the weak chempedak seedling to survive, maybe i  will be able to grow my first chempedak after a long story of failures  ;D

Interesting idea to make the champedek work, I think I'll try that.

Nice looking tree Lory. I hope this tree will be very productive for you. When I first started doing the multiple rootstock trees, I had no idea what I was doing but I've learned a lot since then. The multiple rootstock trees definitely grow faster but excessive rootstocks does not promote faster growth and when too many rootstocks are added, some will likely die back.

I've come to the conclusion that 1-2 additional rootstocks is enough to promote better growth and I don't have any data on production yet because my trees are too young. My climate is relatively cold and all my grafted mango trees flower the first year which forces the tree to waste valuable resources.

The multiple rootstock trees also exhibit a shorter bushier growth habit which may be beneficial for keeping the overall height of the tree in check. Please keep us updated on this tree.

I hope it will work, i couldn't find a way to let my chempedak seedlings survive yet!
So next batch of seeds i'm gonna sprinkle some  mychorrizae spores to the soil before sowing and if the seedling will make it until 2-3 months i will try to add 1-2 jackfruit rootstocks to give them some strength

This is an update of my triple rootstock jackfruit 3 months later.
I put in the soil just one month ago

the young tree seems to grow well and definitely with a more bushy and branching habit   :)

Congratulations Lorenzo,

I can’t wait to see how your tree grows once it’s established and fruiting size! I’m interested if it will show the traits that is currently found in searches such as shorter, bushier overall height, precocity, heavier production such as less alternate bearing.

My current multiple rootstock trees using my latest techniques shows incredible growth with just one additional rootstock. The trunks are extremely strong so it should be able to support heavier Fruit set once it starts producing.

I’m slowly adding multiple rootstocks to all my trees and I will be multiple rootstocking Cherimoya, Atemoya, Lychee and of course Mango this coming year. Too bad it’s so cold to start seeds at this time of year. Bottom heat helps a lot.

Please keep us updated!

Thanks Simon!
I got so much inspiration from your posts about this topic.
As for now I can confirm you a faster and stronger growth compared to simple seedlings of the same bunch.
I hope this will go on later as well.
Yes, having a constant warm temperature all year round helps a lot  :)
