Recommendation on Australian brush cherry
« on: October 14, 2017, 01:32:42 AM »
I wasn't planning on planting this, but a local nursery had seedlings real cheap.  So, I planted it last summer and it had insane growth and was ultra healthy.  However, I had bad soil erosion in my garden, dug it up and replanted.  It did not live through the transplant.  I can easily purchase another, but, I  am reconsidering despite it's growth.  I live in a townhouse anbd have limited space.  So, my last have to do things to stay.  For ones like this, I need healthy growth and good fruit.
So, can I get some comments on the edibility of Australian brush cherry?  I know you can eat the fruit, but, is it something I would enjoy eating?  If not, got plenty of things that could go in it's place.

I actually had to look it up, only to find it is the common lilly pilly that is everywhere here. I even have some haha. Not worth the space if it’s tight, it is treated as an ornamental here and is excellent for hedge/screening. I have tasted one that I remember being particularly good while most are only average. It had a very fresh crisp pop when you ate them and wasn’t super sour/tart. Still wouldn’t plant it instead of most of the other fruit trees you see on here.

Hey Andrew, which nursery did you get it from? and was yours in full sun in the summer? Im looking for a nice hedging plant, and if it can take full sun, then this will be good candidate.

I bought it at Richards garden center.  I had it in mostly shade, but, I have a feeling it would do well in full sun.  When the weather got hot, it started to grow real fast.  It was attractive without fruit.  I would plant another if I didn't have limited space.

S,australe or S,paniculartum? Both are attractive small trees that get festooned with fruit and flowers, Many are seedless or have shrivelled seeds and the fruit of both are sour like unripe green apples with a more open texture. These fruit will never set the world on fire.
