Lawn guy girdled my young custard apple!
« on: May 07, 2018, 08:56:14 PM »
Hard to see how, but he managed to remove about 3/4" tall band of bark around the entire tree, the trunk is about 1" in diameter.  ALL of the bark is removed in this band.

Any chance the tree will survive?  Really pizzes me off.  Any ideas on how to increase chance of survival?

The tree was given to me in very distressed condition, it was finally starting to grow with some nice vigor.  It was even blooming, which I was going to pinch off.

Just had an idea, what if I removed some bark from a branch off of my Geffner Atemoya and tried to graft it on?  Might that work??????  I also have a soursop, but it's not all that big.

He's the same guy that trimmed ALL of the leaves off of a banana plant that had just fruited.  He ain't too bright, but I've been working on educating him.

Never done it myself but I have come across bridge grafting to repair wound.  Perhaps someone on the forum has experience doing this.

https://www.google.com/search?q=bridge+grafting&tbm=isch&source=iu&ictx=1&fir=Y6g-P6QQHQ3liM%253A%252CiQG2ySA4nIGCcM%252C_&usg=__L3vEX5suZAZkRrtq2CQTXDfpByg%3D&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjhl5aL9vTaAhXPoFMKHYA7CggQ9QEISzAD#imgrc=Y6g-P6QQHQ3liM:

Thank you!  That looks like an option for sure.  I wish I had some seedlings, I could do some inarching.

I could use the first half of this method.  I think this might work well??

Question - do I need green bark to graft onto the wood, or will more mature bark work?

that's why I tell my mom I don't want to hire any garden helper.  They don't know what they're dealing. I rather do all the garden work myself with my own two hands.

If I get guys in to help on the garden have to micromanage everything they do, basically when they work I work.

In the situation where things have value, to really help just explain the value.    Say look.. I bought this tree for $50, it is 2 years old, if you hit it with the wheedwhacker you aren't getting paid today.  That and every hour saying " you havn't finished this yet?  You working a half day's pay today?"

Grafting pecans a double khife is sometimes used. Basicly two knives screwed together with a spacer between so a perfect size graft can be made.  Make the round cut and the one down the middle to separate One cut and it slips off to be grafted elsewhere. Of course you can use one knife but you want the graft looking about like you used a double

I would try to see if you can slip the bark off the gefner.  If you can youre in business

You can use one with a  bud and see if it takes.

Have fun

That is helpful, thank you. Do you know if the bark that I am taking off of the dollar tree has to be green?

Not sure on atemoya you may be the one to tell us later.  Pioneer in atemoya patching ...

As long as they slip so you may want to try a small piece first then

match  the circumference  if you can and good luck.

No go, the leaves are so close together on the branches that there's no way to get a good piece of donor bark.  I had to do the bridge graft.  Fingers crossed.
