First jackfruit flower of the 2013 season?
« on: December 17, 2012, 04:39:40 PM »

It might be a bit early to say for sure but it looks like a female flower shoot to me.  What do you guys think?

Based on that picture, Id say it is way too early to tell if it is a male or female flower.

Your right about it being very early.  Without the other male spikes in the pic it doesn't really show how thick the stalk is on this spike.  Could very easily just be wishful thinking on my part.  The male blooms have been on the ends of the branches and not at the base of the trunk so far but I'm not sure if that matters.

I have seen many a male and female at the base of the trunk.  With that being said, is that a grafted tree?  If so, that flower be from da root stock...

No it's a black gold seedling.  When I bought it I was told that jackfruits came true to type and didn't need grafting.

They do not come true to type. They do need to be grafted to produce the exact same fruit as the parent.

Many seedling jackfruits do come close but there can be a lot of variation since they are cross pollinated.
