Are these the right size for a jujube?
« on: January 18, 2013, 03:33:27 PM »
How do these compare to other jujubes you've seen. They look bigger than what I usually see on others' trees.

Very large for a Jujube, is that the Indian/Thai jujube? Most of the Chinese varieties of jujubes I have seen don't get any larger then 2 inch in diamter.
Grow mainly fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

That looks like Indian type.  I have seen anywhere from olive sized to what Jamie posted above.

What are characteristics of Indian jujube and common cultivars?

I have a tree of "Taiwanese" jujube with large round leaves. I think it's at least related to the Indian type.

Jez251,

Wow, that's about the size of a guava!

Questions: Do you own the tree where this jujube came from (the fruit looks awesome)? Is the tree productive? Is production, yearly, regular or irregular? How's the taste?

Very interesting!

Hi Leooel,

Those are fruit from my tree. It produces loads of fruit every year. This is the 3rd year it has been producing and the plant is only 4-5 years old.

Taste is sort of like a less tangy apple when yellow. It changes flavor quickly after that to a nance-like flavor.

Funny you say it tastes like a Nance like flavor after the "yellow stage"...after yellowing they turn a light brownish color and to me, and others I have had taste them, they describe it as a natural fermented-like flavor.  Most do not seem to like it but I have seen some who do.

We have 3 gallon Indian Jujube with fruit on them available for sale right now.  We are not open on Sundays but will be open tomorrow.  Come by and sample the fruit, many who do get hooked.

Yes, that's right. It has a funky fermented flavor, which is what nance tastes like. Nasty! But right before that they are very crisp and enjoyable.

I haven't had a lot of Nance but I didn't find them to have that fermented flavor.

I've only eaten nance fruit out of hand in Nicaragua where it's very popular. And its smell and flavor is strong and ferment-like. I have a plant in the ground but its suffering some major chlorosis.

In Burma (when I was there in Dec) they were selling Jujubes that were that size.
It is big (many sold are smaller) but some varieties do get that size.
I ate the one I got green... I guess that's why it didn't have a lot of flavor :(
Chinese ones I've eaten at all stages (green, yellow, dried out red brown) and they always seem to have nice flavor (but it changes).
What's that got to do with Jose Andres $10 brussel sprouts?
