Delaying flowering of fruit trees
« on: January 18, 2013, 09:24:16 PM »
Is there a product or a way to delay flowering of an avocado tree to push the maturity range further out?   I know that holding back fertilizer, specially nitrogen helps, but I was wondering if there is something else to delay flowering 4-6 weeks.

There are some hormones that may do this, but this is very risky, messing with hormones like gibberellin, application rates need to be precise.

There are two ways you can go about delaying your fruit harvest, you can delay flowering, or delay maturing of the fruit.

gibberellins like GA3 can delay flowering,  the dosage, and timing of application have to be just right.

Other hormones like cytokinins, auxin etc.  can possibly be used to delay ripening, and extend shelf life,  I was looking into this some time back for use in Mangoes, for exporting,  something that can extend the shelf life for any fruit that needs to be shipped long distance is something that is desirable.   delaying maturity can also have the possibility of increasing fruit size.  of course the longer the fruit is on the tree, the more risk of something happening to them.

5.5. Conclusions.
The effect of cytokinin (6-BA) on avocado ripening is greater than that of the other
hormones studied. Cytokinins are likely to be the substances (inhibitors) that prevent
ripening of unpicked or freshly harvested avocado fruits. The significance of an optimum
balance between cytokinins, other hormones and minerals for the effect to be shown cannot
be discounted. More work is needed on the study of the endogenous content and evolution
during ripening.

Carlos I am not suggesting you do any of these things, just sharing information,   if you are going to experiment, just try it on a few trees,  these things may work, but I bet knowing when to apply, and  at what time of the year, will vary depending on variety, and location.

too much of a particular hormone at the wrong time, and you may abort all the flowers. or mess or throw the flowering way off track.
