Son moving to Melbourne, FL
« on: January 19, 2013, 07:37:09 AM »
The oldest bear cub just took a job in Melbourne, FL starting after his graduation from Purdue in May.

Anyone in that area of FL?  What does and doesn't grow there?

Great area!  He/you will love it.  Just north of tropical South Florida so within the right local micro-climate you/he can still grow lots of tropical fruit.  Good luck! :)

As John noted, the devil is in the details in that area.

I imagine that closer to the ocean is way better than inland.  Hopefully forum members in that area can give a better idea

Out on the coast, Merritt Island is loaded with tropical fruit trees including mangos and lychees. They do very well there. Inland is a bit cooler.

I'm on the barrier island and its good for growing tropicals.  The BRFC is a great organization and has a huge sale every spring with thousands of fruit trees from pine island nursery.  Like others have said the further west you go from the ocean the colder it gets although the rain level increases.

Congrats to your son on getting employment.  This means we Floridians will be seeing more of you, Robert, over the next few years. This is a great excuse for you and the family to come visit us.

Thanks, Harry, and to everyone for the replies.

We're looking forward to more Florida as well.  Merritt Island...are there residential areas?  Pricey?  Looks on a map a lot like SC where the barrier island areas I recall were more expensive.  Maybe that is the price for growing lychees.  LOL
