Best substtute for Hayden mango
« on: March 03, 2013, 11:24:26 AM »
A friend of a friend has asked me for mango recommendations.  I've sold him on Pickering and Cogshall, as being compact and tasty, but he really wants a Hayden also. For the usual reasons, I guess.  It tasted good when he was a kid......

I want to convince him to try something other than Hayden, but it would have to have similar qualities.  My experience is limited, but I'm thinking of Baileys Marvel.   Any thoughts on that variety or other good substitutions?

Where is the friend of the friend located? If its in the 'wrong' area, too far inland, he may rarely see fruit from a BM tree. But BM would make a nice 'substitute' for Haden based on its eating qualities. It produces reasonably well in Lake Worth from what I've seen, but out here in the western communities....forget it.

I disagree. My Baileys Marvel ( now my sister's house)- produces well. Its a big tree however.
My sister lives in West Lake Worth. I have  Baileys Marvel planted at my house and its my most beautiful tree.

Its generally a bad producer west of 441. Too fungus susceptible. It performs as badly as Haden in the Acreage/Loxahatchee/Wellington.

Where mangomandan is though, BM seems to do well and is a regular producer.

Maybe mangomandan wants the friend to plant something else so he can enjoy the fruits too ;D

Plant an Edward for very tasty.   Plant a Duncan for heavier crop, more disease resistance and won't dwarf the house, and taste good.

Dang!  No wonder I couldn't Google it.   Next thing you know I'll forget how to spell MahiChinook.

I was kind of hoping he'd share his Baileys Marvels some day.........

But he lives west of 441 in Wellington. So maybe Baileys and Haden are both bad ideas.

Thanks, Alex. I didn't know where BM ranked for fungus resistance.

If he is looking for something that tastes like Haden but without as many issues....Van Dyke might be the way to go. Van Dyke's flavor is very similar to Haden. In fact, I consider Van Dyke almost like a smaller fruit, more productive and slightly later-season Haden. Might work out well if he's growing the earlier season Pickering and Cogshall.

While Edward is excellent, its issues with shyness and inconsistency would put it low on THIS list.

I would recommend Southern Blush.  My second choice would be Harvest Moon.

If he wanted to stay in the Haden family, Frances Hargrave could be an option.

I would recommend Southern Blush.

Wouldn't be a bad choice; gets a lot of athracnose but does produce out west. I like it better than Haden myself.

Hayden did well in Binks Forest Wellington- way west of 441. This was our first house here-the tree was planted in 1997- it's still there and producing.   This is all anecdotal. I personally think Haden is delicious.

How about a Hatcher Mango - I thought they the fruit tasted pretty close to Hayden. If interested, I wouldn't buy it from the Hatcher Farm People since they charge crazy prices.
Excalibur  had some trees for sale at last year's Palm beach fruit Society sale.

I would in no way recommend a Hatcher.  Fruit is average at very best.

Thanks, Gentle Folks.

I'll pass along your observations to him and he can decide what matters most in his choice.   :)
