Null,

It looks like mine, but I will double check when I get home tonight.  Are the undersides of the leaves silver-white?

Cheers,
Richard

Richard,

Thanks for the response, I will take a closer look at it when I get back from work. As far as I know it was a lighter whitish green color from what I can recall, you may be able to see it partially in one of the pics.

Elaeagnus latifolia Linn. belongs to family Elaeagnaceae locally known as Soh-shang in Khasi hills of Meghalaya. The people of Meghalaya have found many uses of Soh-shang fruit besides enjoying it as fresh fruit. In North Eastern states, it is quite common in Sibsagar (Dikho valley of Assam), Naga hills (Nagaland), Khasi and Jaintia hills of Meghalaya. The fruits are eaten raw with salt and used for making chutney and fruit pulp is used for making jam, jelly and refreshing drink (Patel et al., 2008). http://scialert.net/fulltext/?doi=ajpnft.2012.19.26&org=10

All mine germinated last year outside on my patio. Air temps should have been upper 80s during that time of the year.

BTW, this website says they are nitrogen fixers and the fruit contain fatty acids.

Here is the article:

Oscar you mentioned fruiting was in April/may.   When did you start seeing the flowers pop out in Puna?

Couple of the original five I bought from you are about 1.5 tall in the pot and looking nice so far.

tasted this for the first time today, remind me of strawberry, lychee, with guava paste texture...very good fruit, could be made into raisins I bet, they would taste amazing dried, but are excellent fresh out of hand...very pretty fruit, the plant is a liana, with thorns...so once i get it rooted, I'm going to plant them underneath the south side of a large non-fruiting tree, on the border of my property, where i can avoid it's thorns....cold is not an issue for this species...but according to my friend, it took many years to fruit from seed...maybe because his plant is in so much shade?  any how....this is a good fruit worth adding to the collection if you have  space.

The one i have is practically thornless, and the very few thorns i find are not sharp, not really thorns. Also i would not describe it as a liana. It is a bushy tree that sends long runners that like to climb. Kind of reminds me of climbing ylang ylang (Artabotrys uncinatus).
Didn't think of drying them. Will try that with the next batch. Thanks for the suggestion.
Oscar
