Po Pyu Kalay aka lemon meringue mango photos
« on: March 16, 2012, 08:38:54 PM »
Po Pyu Kalay sounds pretty interesting going by the Pine Island nursery description------->>>>>

Po Pyu Kalay is a unique Asian mango from the exotic nation of Myanmar (formerly Burma).
The large vigorous tree produces small, yellow, elongated, somewhat pointed fruit with a
bright lemon-yellow, moist, spicy, flesh.
Commercially it has been dubbed the “Lemon Meringue” mango for its aroma.

Some people are very fond of PPK. To me it is an NDM imitator....so a good mango but a little one-dimensional.

If you like NDM though you should like PPK.

I have one that I planted last year, it bloomed and seems to be holding a few fruit so hopefully I will get to try it this summer.

You sure you're not thinking of a different mango? The ones I had (from Harry's yard) had a complex 'fruit punch' flavor with a bit of tart. They were phenomenal. My wife called them the "fruit punch mango" (in Spanish, of course :-). If I remember correctly they were one of the few mangoes that didn't have internal breakdown issues. Hopefully Harry labeled them right :-).

You had the correct thing, Jeff.  Alex.....I am a bit surprised to hear your thoughts on ths PPK.  I think the PPK is quite good. I think it tastes entirely different than NDM.  The squirrels in my yard are also very much in non-agreement with you, Alex.  This is one of their most favorite mangoes in the yard.  I have to battle them for each and every fruit on this tree. They eat the LM's like crazy and rarely touch a NDM. I think the marketing name of Lemon Meringue is quite descriptively accurate.  Reminds me very much of my grandmother's lemon filling for her (famous iin my memory anyway) lemon meringue pie.  A great mango with good disease resistance.

Meh, haven't been terribly impressed by it. Last year it made it in my notes as being NDM-ish.

From memory definitely wouldn't describe it as 'fruit punch' like.....I'll have to have some more of them this year though. Enough people swear by it.

How does the ppk compare to its offspring the LZ? I would love to have a side by side comparison...

I really liked the PPK. I do not think it is one dimensional at all. If I had the room, I would plant both the LZ and the PPK but if I had to choose one I would go with the LZ. Similar flavors but the LZ is much better.

Well given the high praise its receiving from you guys I have to wonder if I've had the same mango. Maybe it is just my relative bias against SE Asian mangoes in general, or maybe it was sampled next to a superior quality mango (which often leads to an unfair evaluation).

I'll make a point to try more PPKs this summer. ;)

I too prefer the more "spicy" or "resinous" Indian mangos but I loved the PPK and LZ.

I realize I am late to the party here but as has been stated, absolutely no comparison between PPK and NDM.  NDM is pure honey sweetness with a very distinct flavor profile all of its own.  It has no tartness or lemon flavor whatsoever.  PPK, or lemon meringue, has a very distinct ceamy sweet lemony flavor profile.  It is an excellent mango.  Only drawbacks in my book is its vigorous growth habit and small sized fruits.  If you have the space it is definitely worth growing.

Now, comparing PPK to its seedling LZ.  Really no comparison to me.  LZ has a distinct sweeter, more orangy citrus overtone to it with a hint of lemony tartness versus a true lemon tone to that of the PPK.  To me, for LZ, think of a really great orange, say a honeybell, add a portion of meyer lemon, and mix with a base of "mango" flavor. Yes, this may be a little cavemanish but that is how I would describe it in a flavor profile way of thinking.

Nam doc mai is boss. You can either eat it fully ripe and super sweet or at various stages of underripeness for added tart.

Florigon seems to be one of the few that hasn't had its flavor adversely affected by the wet weather.

If Florigon taste was adversely affected by rain they would taste like water balloons here.  ;) But quite the opposite is the case.

Looks really delicious! I can't believe how far behind my Cogshall and Glenn are...still very green and hard as a rock, very little sign of coloring up  :(

Please let us know about the LM (PPK)...I just got a small tree. FGM, can you comment on his LM tree? How is the growth habit and how tall/old is it? Thanks! Maybe one day you can post a picture of his tree...

The LM these fruits came from is only 8 ft high and 5 feet around.  It had over a dozen mangos but it is still too young to truly judge the growth characteristics.
