Bud Grafting Cherimoya and Guava Trees
« on: April 05, 2012, 11:06:37 AM »
Has Anyone tried Bud grafting in Cherimoya and Guava trees? I know this method is used exclusively in Roses which are hard to graft, from what I read this type of graft where bud eye is inserted into the pocket right over the cambium layer and bark of root stock is flapped over the scion wood, it sort of gets very tight contavt and moisture control.

Anyone? I will be receiving my scions by this weekend. I want to do it right so I dont lose them this time.
1. I got parafilm tape.
2. Do I need wax OR a good tightly wrapped parafilm would do the job.
3. Do I do Cheft or some other type of graft.

Main question is that my mature Cherimoya tree trunk is about 12" in diameter, I want to graft onto the trunt on two sides so I get low branches of new variety.  What would be best way to achieve that graft? Any pictures for reference would be helpful.

I have not tried bud grafting for cherimoya. Clefts seem to work well so I never saw the need to try anything different. Also, personally I don't like Parafilm for grafting. It is too weak. I have had much better luck with a product called nescofilm. You can put a lot more pressure on the tape before it breaks. With parafilm you will probably need to wrap your grafts with rubber bands as well to get a good connection.

This Parafilm that I just got is quite strong. for some reason the last one I got was just a roll with no packaging, this one seems genuine in original packaging. I stretched it hard and it breaks only if you pull too fast. Slow stretch is quite strong. I will look into your tape recommendation.

any updates on the bark grafted cherimoyas?

what about your guava? I heard success rate for guava grafts are low.

behlgarden had great success with these grafts. I believe those are the scions I send, if they are, they are holding fruits right now.

Out of 10 or so Cherimoya grafts, about 6 took. Two actually fruited as well (see pictures).

On Guava, I got success there as well, via cleft graft, and got fruits on new scions right away.

Look at these crazy loaded fruit clusters

Wow! Very nice clusters! I am very envious.  One of my 10' cherimoya tree only had only 4 fruits this year without hand pollination.

Yes Daniel, they have grown quite big. I pulled one that was 2.8lb, but had split badly. Almost every single one is splitting. And its not even time to pick yet.

for the split annonas you can properly ripen them by wrapping the wounds with buddy tape! and placing in a brown paper bag!

I have pics if you need them to see what I'm talking about!

don't let split annona fruits ruin your day!

they can be salvaged in most cases!

Adam, thanks for the tip. In my case, when I find split fruit, I pick it and its got ants in them, so I wash it, and then put in a bag. It develops fungus at the wounds.

What should I do in that case? dont want to trap ants inside. washing it makes it fungii growth?

wash out the ants with water from the sink (city water with Chlorine is good for once)

I find the shower head looking device for washing dishes, works great.

gently dry the fruit.  I actually shook the fruit, and the water flew out of the cracks...

then wrap with tape, like sealing up a graft!  hard to explain! but the wounds should be sealed as best as possible (buddy tape is best because of the porosity it has! )

after taping up,  then wrap in a paper towel and put in a paper bag.

mine ripened quickly with no mold!

and the cracked gefners and lisas were eaten with zeal!

Wow, that's impressive! You have a mature tree that could hold those clusters. I hand pollinated last year and i had over 20 plus fruits in one branch and it snapped. This year I let my trees self pollinate and production is way down. I've had 7-8 fruits ripen so far and about 15 or 20  are on the trees. Here is a small cluster of 3 and a Booth I found on the ground this afternoon.

Behlgarden,

Nice that Cherimoya tree was a random seedling right? I recall you talking about it in the past, it sounds like a great tree.
Grow mainly fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

I found some more clusters inside the canopy....and here are pics of my African Pride. You can have as much as you want of Pierce and Booth scion in March.

Thanks JF,

I guess annonas always look tastier on the other side of the continent.

I'm really amazed you guys have such nice atemoyas this time of year.

I have about 3 fruits hanging around...on trees that tried to go dormant, but didn't shut down yet.

So that's what African Pride fruits look like. I keep hearing from a friend how great it tasted and how he took slices off it in the fridge each day like it was cheese and it lasted more than a week. He got a 6-pounder and some cherimoyas.
