Maha Chanok from Excalibur...14 months later
« on: March 07, 2014, 02:24:25 PM »
Just wanted to update on my Maha...its been 14 months since I've had the tree. I purchased it January 15, 2013...its blooming now! I'm very excited, not sure "if" any of them will hold but if it does I'll leave a couple of them on the tree. Would love to taste at least one from my tree. Hoping for the best...

January 2013

Now...

And just for fun here's my Lancetilla that I dug up the ground and put in a pot...the tree is almost 6 years old. It has never held a single fruit so I decided to have fun and experiment with it, grow it as small/short as possible just because. I severely pugged it last summer a couple of months before I dug it up and then put it in a pot...hard to believe I didn't kill this poor tree  :o

Right before I dug it up in Sept. 2013

Today...finally getting some new growths...

Nice looking Maha, hope the fruit comes to fruition! And the Lantecilla is a warrior!

I cannot believe how nicely shaped your plants are!
This maha must have been "pugged" pretty much like your glenn, their shape is so similiar!
Do your practice any kind of twig benging by any chance?

Thanks Adam, I'm hoping for at least one but not more than two.

Grassflats, that Lancetilla is a warrior, who knew? :o

Triloba, my Glenn is in the Gritty mix but the mix is so heavy I decided to use the 5-1-1 mix for my Maha, lots of Pine Bark pieces, makes it a lot easier to move around...

Appreciate it Pan, No, I don't use the twig "bending" method...I just pug the branches that are grows tall and lanky and hope for the best. The bending method does work great though, I've seen great results form members here...I'm just too lazy to do it  ::) lol... I usually trim my trees pretty much the same way, that's probably why they both look similar in shape...

Here's a few fruits developing on my Maha...they're slowly starting to have that elongated shape that Maha is known for, its my first mango variety that has this type of shape...Really hoping a couple of them mature  8)

I'll give it a few more weeks to see what falls off on its own...and then thin them if I have to?

Your Maha looks great!. I bought one last Fall and hope it will produce next year.

What is that growing in the pot next to your Lancetilla in photo #6?

Thanks Michael, that's my potted Glenn Mango...it bloomed this year but most of the blooms got hit with powdery mildew  not sure how many will survive...here's a picture of it taken last year...

This one is getting pugged soon "if" I have no fruits

Nancy - I would not bother to thin the Mahachanok.   Let nature take its course for now unless you are not concerned with it holding the fruit and wish the tree to focus on its growth.  If this is the case, I would remove all the fruit now.

Nanxy - Rob beat me too it!  I have thinned out some of my mangoes on one of my trees cuz I thought they had too many,
and then the tree continued to drop them till I have fewer than I might have had IF I had not touched them at all!
Though it is different if someone wants to totally rid the plant of fruits.....

These trees are much smarter than we give them credit for, eh?

Thanks for the advise Rob and Gary...I will not thin them out since I really do want to taste at least one from my tree. I will let nature do its thing...appreciate it!!

3 weeks later since that last picture...lost (dropped) a lot of baby fruitlets so I'm glad I took Rob and Gary's advise and not thinned them out...few are sizing up but still too small and early to tell how and if they will mature?
I'm sure many more if not all of them will fall off  :'(

Though it looks a lot bigger in these pictures, they are only between 1.5" - 2.5" long  ::)

Is your tee in the ground or pot?  How much water is it getting?

It's in a pot...I try to be consistent with the watering about every other day to every day, I check it on a daily basis and when I see the top couple of inches are dry I water... we've been in the low to mid 90's lately and the humidity hovering around 40-60% humidity

I hope you get to try some maha from you tree this year.  It is sad seeing the mangoes drop :-(
Mine still thinks it is winter and has not pushed any flowers or leaves.

Ok, my first concern was not enough water.  Could just be natural attrition.
