Sergio, at first I very doubtful whether to prune them or not, but as you can see on the pictures, it worked out. I first pruned the tip when the seedling was close to 3 ft high. Month later, my brother cut again the tips. ..

Adam, great job and great pictures! You're my idol  ;)

Oscar, the answer is: Ongo - Myrianthus arboreus.

Chris H. reported: 'Crafton Clift said there might be either a male or female at the Kampong in Miami but it has never fruited'.

Beautiful plant! Water water water? I'm not sure if this plant is suited for my arid climate. Does it need more water than a banana? Does it have a tap root?

De nada....Felipe.  It was my pleasure to provide what I could for the sake of science!  I hope you get some to take.

...for the sake of science, and for my delight  ;D and hopefully I can also redistribute to other fruitlovers (Sergio?) :-)

Sergio, my guess is that with good cultural practices, they should be fruiting in less then 10 years. Over here are some 15 years old huge seedling mameys producing a lot, meaning that they started to produce some years ago.

I would tip-prune both trees, to induce branching and more horizontal growth, or else they will grow like pines  :D

Noel, where did you get your rollinia from? Did you distribute budwood from this specimen?

I've taste a few rollinias, none impressed me. The bigger sized had the worst (bland) taste.

Sergio, I don't have much information right now, but I'll keep you updated ;)

1360
Sergio, WS can be airlayered??

As far as I know, in the spanish mainland you can find Vernon, Dade, Mc Dill and Wooly (C. tetrameria). I not sure if those cultivars are the best taste wise.

1361
John, please ask him! I'm also very curious about this cultivar...

As I said, I will be able to acquire a Magana and Viejo in a few month. Specially the last one sounds and looks very appealing to me. Also the dwarf growing habit could be positve in my case, because of less wind exposure  8)

1362
JF, I would think it could be a nutrient issue, but as far as I know WS does not need/like too much water...

BTW, what is the difference between organic and non-organic granules? Marketing?

I also fertilize with something like 10-10-10 with micro-nutrients, mainly during spring-summer. Nitrogen apparently does not inhibit fruit production, but makes the tree grow a lot. Maybe that could be a problem for container growing and small yards, but thats not may case..

After I allowed Murahilin to take some budwood for mailing to the Canary Islands, looks like the tree is going to push new growth all up and down the tree.  Would be nice tro see a wayward bloom pop up.
Harry

Harry, I didn't know some GS budwood came from your collection. Thanks a lot for allowing Mura! Muchas gracias  :)

I only know, most mango and some manilkara grafts did take, no information about GS. Here is a two week old picture of the GS-babys:

I want these two:    8)

about 3-6yrs depending...not quite certain though...just based on observations here in Central FL for last 6yrs.

A seedling fruiting after 3-6 years? Is think this is very very optimistic, or am I wrong? But I know grafted trees produce very early. I have seen trees flowering and fruiting a few month after grafted.

Ethan, which cultivars do you have? So far, which one tastes the best?

I have some very old trees, which I do not know if were grafted. The I have one which I think is Pike and a Mc Dill. This is the fist one last November:

In the end remember you will end up eating what you produce. Also often in the application you can get a drop or two of the stuff on your hands, or breathe some of it.  And some of these negative reactions don't show up for years later.
Oscar

I absolutelly agree! Remeber that the industry wants us to buy all the expensive products, so they are not interested in us being aware of the risks and danger of using those chemicals...

1368
Do you guys know which cultivar is the most productive?

Noel, the TREC in homestead has the greatest collection of cultivars? Do you know how many they have? I thought the greatest collection was in the USDA station in PR...

1369
No, No, No my friend.  :)  By no means.  Just wanted to see if something else can be grown where I live.
What mameys are you growing Felipe?

Of course I was kidding!  ;)

Currently I'm only growing Pantin and a mexican seedling (the fruit was excellent!). I'm probably will add in 6-12 month Magana and Viejo to my collection...

Anon is a term used in in Latin America for many types of annonaceous fruits including rollinias.

In Latin America 50% of all fruits are either called 'zapote' or 'anona'...  :-\

This thread is discriminating  ;D

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Marula (Sclerocarya birrea)
« on: January 30, 2012, 04:59:39 PM »

In South Africa, Marula is king and the rest follow's :), They are absolutely Fantastic!!! Has anyone tried Marula?

So, how did you consume the marula, in natura? I though this fruit was only consumed after procesing...
do you have any pictures of marula fruit/plants?

1374
I think one nice fruit that I'm not growing but could perform in my place is santol.
Then there are some brazilian fruit, which are reported to be great, but I'm not growing. Jaboticaba is my only Myrciaria and so far no fruits (so far it does not grow too much. I thinks it needs more water and humididy).

Rambutan, pulasan, durian, mangosteen are mission imposible aver here..

BTW, I think maprang is overrated in this forum; it's like a mago-flavoured plum, inferior to a decent mango.

1375
Here you can see some Pantin mamey in the Island of Tenerife. I think they are 7 years old..
