Tropical Fruit Discussion / Dehydrator: Excalibur 2900/3900 vs Sedona
« on: June 14, 2012, 04:20:11 PM »
Any comments versus the two ?  Anybody have these ?  They are both more expensive that the "average" dehydrator but they seem to have better attributes.  I like the idea of the twin fans, timer and computer controlled temp.  I also like that the Sedona has a door.

Oh, does anybody know where to buy either of these locally (in Broward/Palm Beach Counties) ?

Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Initial review of 2012 Mangoes
« on: June 13, 2012, 11:21:49 PM »
Ok, I have tasted at least a dozen different varieties so far.  While I was underwhelmed, and a little worried, about the watered down quality of the Glenns I have had, I can say I have been quite impressed with the majority considering the copious amounts of rain we have had just prior to harvesting of the fruit.

Of excellent quality

Cushman - just had tonight...in the tops along with Southern Blush and PPK
Southern Blush - had tonight, see above
PPK - see above
Baileys Marvel
Florigon
Edward
Dupius Saigon
Dot
Cogshall

Of average quality
Quidnau (close to above average but not excellent)
PSM (close to excellent)
Isis (unfair as I just wasn't thrilled with the flavor profile)
Pico (inconsistent quality)
Excalibur (very disappointing based on the quality of 2010...2011 and 2012s were not of superior quality as the 2010 was)

Below average

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Red fleshed Avocado ?
« on: May 28, 2012, 03:03:54 PM »
A customer came in and said they were on a cruise in the Caribbean and tried a red fleshed avocado from one of the islands.  Yes, they claimed the flesh was red, not the skin.  Anybody ever seen such a thing ?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / 2012 South Florida Mango size
« on: May 14, 2012, 05:48:51 PM »
I toured some area mango trees this weekend for any signs of ripening.  Other than a loner, runt sized Dot, there were no signs of anything ready to pick within the next week or so.  One thing I did notice that it seemed like a lot of the mango sizes were smaller than normal.  After seeing zands' post with his mangoes and his comments regarding the size of the Van Dykes, has anybody else noticed their magoes being smaller in size than what would be considered "normal" ?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / New mangoes from Zills

I am trying to find out the parentage on the newly released Pineapple Pleasure.

For those in the know, yes, that means you murahilin and Jeff, there was a cross they were experimenting with:  Valencia Price x Nam Doc Mai.  I was a little curious if this was the new Pineapple Pleasure...well, it isn't.  BUT, I did find out that they WILL be releasing this cross in the near future under the name Candy.
