Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Taste: Green Sapote vs Mamey Sapote
« on: February 03, 2012, 05:41:56 PM »
I recently tried mamey and GS for the first time.  The mamey was a Magana but I found it to be quite good with hints of green banana and melon plus custard like consistency.  Much better than I expected after seeing Bryan's tree in PR covered in fruit.  The green sapotes were darker almost red colored flesh, the first one reminded me dead on of pumpkin pie filling w/out the spices.  The one the next day was very flan like.  The green sapote as Oscar pointed out can easily be eaten by one person, the mameys you either need a big appetite or a few friends.

both very good in their own ways,

I use an organic 10-10-10 granule on a lot of my trees including annonas.  I apply it once a month around the drip line except during winter.

Nice fruits this year BTW

You've got to work on the next generation, my daughter loves most the fruits I let her try (including durian) and my young son loves avocado, banana, white sapote and green sapote so far.

It is fun finding adventurous people willing to try new things and people like Harry's coworker who haven't had something for years.  I started to give my neighbor across the alley a few passionfruit and explain how to ripen/eat them.  When she saw them her eyes lit up so I went got her a bunch more.  Now she and her husband participate in CRFG and they receive samples of various fruits from me to try.  That reminds me, I have some mamey ice cream for them.

Grow them for your own joy.

Nice discovery!  The answers to your questions, yes and yes though on the grafting we should probably wait another month or so.

My guess is it is grafted and usually the only grafted ones you find are Suebelle and rarely McDill.  It is really hard to tell but just below the start of the canopy, there is a mark on the bark (mostly covered by bamboo stake) that might be a cleft/wedge?

These might be dumb questions,
do you fertilize?  sprinkler watered or deep soak? full sun?

I treat mine like my citrus using organic granules and soaking about once a week, tons of sun.  My Vernon is covered in bloom spikes and many of my 'new' grafts on it are pushing blooms too.

I have about 15-20? grafted varieties including some C. tetrameria selections, hopefully by the end of summer I'll be able to add another 10ish.  If you buy a mature tree, we can add more varieties to it, if you dont mind the wait you can come over and graft up a seedling.

Having the mamey right outside the door is smart, easy to check when ripe and easy to release the hounds should you need to.

nice trees,

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Are grafting knives necessary?
« on: February 01, 2012, 12:43:41 AM »
I use a small wood plane to help insure smooth straight cuts.  I usually do most of the shaping w/the razor the finish w/the plane.  Dont forget to sterilize and sharpen the plane.

Disposable utility razor and a small wood plane, probably $5 for both from Harbor Freight.  Clean between trees, tools and hands, I have a bottle of isopropyl alcohol w/a sprayer screwed on top.

Nice GH Jacob, lots of room for more plants, do you still have the smaller one set up?

Everything is looking great, it'll be hard to resist letting at least one mango grow.

What, there were fruits in those videos?  I need to change the varieties I am growing or maybe just the people I eat fruit with.  There is nothing like random scantily clad women eating tropical fruits. :D Was that a Sarteneja custard apple they ate?  That Lancetilla could feed a family of 4 for a week.

What a disaster, at least your family is safe, everything else can be replaced and replanted.  Hopefully the new location is not the Ohio of Thailand.

Congratulations on the multiple blooms Fruitguy, you've got a very interesting collection of garcinias.  I wonder if it could be grafted? :)  If you get a good crop, please add me to the list for a seed or two.

Thank you Oscar for straightening out the confusion.

Wow Harry, what an incredible video, nice choice on the music too.  Having only seen recent pictures, the video gives a better idea how big your yard is without all those trees blocking the way.  It amazes me how fast (to me) you place has recovered and returned to a tropical fruit paradise.  Thankfully those bleachers only hit the greenhouse and not your home.

I think I'll stick w/earthquakes, at least they surprise you.

Very cool Adam, congrats.  I recently tried canistel for the first time and enjoyed it a lot.  Supposedly Ross is better so it is next on my list to try.  Your tree looks great, about how tall is it?

cheers,
