Mango Blooms in October in Florida?
« on: October 15, 2017, 11:10:04 AM »
Since Hurricane Irma blew threw East Central Florida last month, my mango trees have been doing some interesting things.  My Dwarf Hawaiian, for example, has produced lots of blooms now that its roots have been submerged for over 4 weeks, while my Sweet Tart flushed out.

Cool :) . Guess the wind stress caused them to bloom. By the way, I would relocate those mango trees. Being in water for a long period of time will eventually kill them. Move them to higher ground where it does not tend to flood.

My Choc Anon, which did not fruit of flower at all during the mango season, now has a few fruits on it.  It flowered before Irma, I was checking my trees for damages when I found flowers on one branch and two tiny mangoes in another.

i got 5 mango trees flowering too.  Mahachanok in the greenhouse has flowerings spikes on every branch.  about 10+ branches.  Maybe i'll be able to get mango fruit to eat early next year.

Update after 45+ days of "lake watering" after Hurricane Irma.  The blooming Dwarf Hawaiian mango and Sweet Tart mango (on the right of the Sweet Tart) are still hanging in there.

None of these mango early blooms pan out in the form of edible fruits but they add to the general mango excitement index so it's all good. You are seeing nature doing what it wants to do which is multiply, sink or swim. We are just onlookers.

And if you do get a fruit from very early blooms is it is unpalatable or too watery.

What I'm seeing is a lot of new growth. Haven't tipped any tree since couple of weeks before Irma, but we got a decent amount of rain -- two inches in my yard, three a few miles away -- some days ago. That, no doubt, is contributing to the new flushes. But it's also cooled off since the rain, so perhaps the trees will do through a quiet spell for a while and then flower. Can only wait and watch. Also, since the cooler time of the year is here, time to add to the mulch.
