Mango Cocktails on the Condo Balcony? One day maybe?

Here is my little pride and joy...a cocktail mango with condo mangoes as scions!

My two favorites!

Cogshall up top, Pickering Down low.

Maybe one day I can enjoy this mango cocktail on the balcony of a condo?  Nah..I'd rather have some land to plant in the ground! LOL.  More likely for me to give the tree to someone who has a condo... ;D

Sure is a cute little thing. Be careful, for me at least, Cogshall grows twice as fast as Pickering.

hey!  thanks for the info.

It's funny because the exact opposite is true at my house!! lol

I posted a recent pic of my condo mangoes under the rubber sugar apple thread:..the smallest of the bunch is my cogshal!  it grows much slower for me.

go figure!?

maybe yours is an older more established tree? and my experience with both cultivars is limited to about 3yrs...so I can't say much...mine are mostly in pots as well.

maybe in the ground, things are different?

First, I agree with Harry...as in the case of a cocktail citrus with a grapefruit/lemon and orange, the grapefruit will ultimately take over and control over the others without severe pruning of the grapefruit...be careful that the Cogshall does not take over and "buly out the Pickering (like the reference  ;) ;) ;D ;D )

As for the Cogshall growing slower than a Pickering...every pot grown Cogshall I have seen grows faster and larger than Pickering.  I think both are slow growing when small but as they age, the Cogshall will grow faster and larger.

Adam,

I need you to call me. I tried to send you a P.M. but the reply said you don't get mail. I have something at the house for you.

Cogshall is lagging behind in the cocktail race so far. (being a slower scion than pickering)

Pickering is growing faster...but is very compact....maybe Cogshall will start to win the race over time.

I think this pair of mango cultivars, is a nice one.

I'm thinking of other combos to create?

Maha chanok + Rutledge (that would be nice!)

how about a Carrie + Tyler+ Fairchild ?

Can anyone one else think of a cool combination?

here is the condo cocktail as of today...pickering (left) flowered nicely, but I removed the blooms...and the cogshall (right) shed its leaves, but is leafing out nicely.

Thanks Pugluvr,

I figured someone like you would be interested in such a tree...being that you're a mango grower who doesn't live in the tropics.  You can have more mango varieties in small space, and less trees to protect when it gets cold.

I'm quite certain the combination of cultivars will compliment each other nicely, but I'm also sure it will require pruning at some point.  I notice with cocktail trees, the scions can get disoriented, and will grow into each other.

I'll keep you posted on the tree's progress...I bet there will be no fruits until 2014...If it tries to flower again this year, I'll cut them off.

I put a net around my just grafted scion which is flowering and will keep the weight of the branch that way. It has 3 mango's now and grafted 14 weeks ago. If they grow big i will put pics here together with the ndm mango's on the other branches.

I still have never seen a cocktail-tree with different fruits hanging on it. Can anybody post a pic of that?

I also have a pomelotree with lime grafted on it but the lime (seedless) is always looking bad, also on the pomelotree. That pomelo tree was 3 feet high when i bought it and it had blooms but since then never had them again.

so far so good...the tree seems like it will work out.   I've had to cut the blooms off of both scions this year...and the pickering has tried to bloom twice.

Nice Adam,

I'm working on a failed graft tree, the center trunk died after the graft didn't take, and about 7 new branches have grown spreading out, it seems like a perfect rootstock for a cocktail tree. I think I'll do Pickering, Cogshall, a local variety here I got from Paul Thompson's Vista property, and a few more I've got to choose from. Any suggestions?

Yep - my 3-n-1 cocktail tree, of which all three varieties will produce mangoe's this year,
is doing very well....The Valencia Pride is dominating, and I should know for sure what the
other two varieties are this year as the how they were tagged when I bought it simply
doesn't seem true (it was nam doc mai and haden) but we'll just have to wait and see.

And I will have to do some trimming, for sure to keep the VP in check....I'll take a picture
tomorrow and re-post it here....

Anyway, i was going to say, Adam, aren't you supposed to cut the flower panicle off
after it's had time to set any pea-sized mangoes?  Otherwise, what I've heard from this forum, is that
it will re-flower if you cut it off too soon....

But the Picker-Shal does look quite cute!

@ Mark, thanks!  You should put that one called Angie on there with Cogshall/Pickering.  Maybe a mahachanok as well.

they are all somewhat dwarf I hear.

@ MangoFang, thanks for the info, I didn't know that.  I will probably let it flower next year regardless.

@ Edzone9, u r probably right!

Mark,

May I ask which Paul Thompson variety you're growing?
