which ice cream bean is the best?
« on: October 30, 2014, 10:55:23 AM »
Hi guys, I'm starting to grow a ice cream bean tree that I got about a month ago (October 6, and the picture is October 26) that's about 5 ft tall.. not many leaves, but starting to sprout some more.. the cool thing is it seems to be growing every day.. there's always something new coming out somewhere on the tree.. It is the regular 'inga edulus".. I saw some people selling on ebay a variety called "Inga feuilleei".. and saying that it is more cold tolerant and has bigger pods too? Are there any other varieties that are any good? Anyone also have any for sale that I can purchase? Thanks.

saw one on ebay and gave it a try... according to the seller, it is bigger and more tasty and has better cold tolerance.. so it isn't too bad.. I get 12 chances (and a reply with a guarantee too from the seller that it will sprout or they can replace until it does)..

I havent tried that one. I have a couple species. I'll trade you one of my species for one of those when you get a seedling?

Both feuillei and edulis are good species. Feuillei is short, stocky, and square shaped. The edulis is round, thin, and extremely long. The edulis in this photo doesn't do it justice as it can get 2-3 feet long.

Chris Rollins told me that you need several inga trees from different sources (sibling trees and individual trees supposedly don't produce heavily according to him) to get good fruit set, I was wondering if i could get the same effect if I just planted one tree of each of the 5 species I have in a group.

Anyone know anything about this?

Some ingas are self sterile. Others from same species can fruit fine without any other pollinators. (Situation is similar to that with cacao.) Which means that to completely insure good fruit set you will need at least 2 seedling trees from same species. Planting different species probably isn't going to help you.

I read somewhere that ingas are supposed to hybridize readily, that's why I thought that different species might provide polination

Thanks for the info fruitlovers on the difference between the two.. hopefully my seeds can germinate soon (he even said that they might on the trip over here and that they are very easy to grow).. For davidgarcia899, sure..  ;D I'll trade with you hopefully in a month or two.. I'm not sure how long they will take to sprout a good sized seedling..

Arvind, My Inga feuillei produces extremely well as a stand alone tree.

Don't have enough experience yet to answer that question. I can only say the Inga feuillei sometimes has self sterility. That doesn't mean that there might be occasional trees on their own that self pollinate ok. Just means if you want to make certain to get good fruit set with this species you better have more than one tree.

Between 10 to 30 fruits would be enough for me.I guess 1 tree would be ok for me
