Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Any info on Apricot Mango?

My take: Through the years a lot of backyard seedling mango trees have been dubbed apricot mango. Same for peach mango. Every year craigslist has peach mangos advertised. This year too>>>

Juicey, Sweet Peach Mangos For Sale ! - $1 (Fort Lauderdale)  (photos included)

Problem with your theory is that the Delray Apricot does not taste like apricot.  The Apricot that fliptop and pineislander are talking about is not a Florida backyard seedling tree.

Bullie being a bully. Ignore him, bovine. When you try a ripe Giselle, do not let the Forum's resident bully stop you from posting your opinion about it.

Go F yourself..the only one who is acting like a bully and attacking is you (but I didnt need to say that cause its clear for all to see, as this is the second time).  You know nothing about me but its easy to see what you are.

Yes, I will ask him next time I'm out that way (unless he responds here first).

Click on the link in pineislander's post above...you have your answer.  Appears to be different from the Delray Beach sourced fruit.

So, we are talking about the same mango the problem would be to compare with the "Apricot" of the east coast.
Maybe shot could fill us in on the provenance he has posted about it before.

Thanks, Alex and Rob and pineislander, for the additional information. I got the fruit in question from shot's place under the name Apricot (not Bali?) which I guess possibly further confuses things?

You should ask him if he got the budwood from Walter, or if not, where his fruit/tree originated.

ebay link shows no items for sale.

I think they all ended.

You seemed to be posting based on a random review from someone you gave a fruit to.  Doesn't add much credence to saying how good it is.  Hey, you may like it.  Have you tried a hone grown well ripened Tommy Atkins?

Personally,  if you havent noticed, I love mangoes but not every mango.  There are many I dont like (I am giving my opinion, not saying all will or will not agree).  I haven't met anyone who truly "likes" every variety.

To me when eaten slightly underripe Dot has a great citrus taste to it. Definitely more so than Lemon Zest.

You are correct.  Alex appears to be the only one currently who can provide a Cecilove. . .but I'm likely looking at a six month wait.  Even then it would be a very young tree in a 1 gallon pot.  As much as I want one, I'd like to get another tree in the ground in the next two weeks or so.  That said, my Plan B is to go with an Angie, for which I have read mostly favorable reviews.

Angie, blech (just my opinion).  If you like Carrier, then Angie is an good alternative.   It does have a susceptibility to getting scab.

Spoke to Walter.  Tree is located in downtown Delray.  As Alex made reference, could be well over 50 years old.

Flavor wise, Walter compared it to the fruit he calls Amy, which is a Jakarta seedling.   He said when he tried the fruit from the mother tree, it was "tasty" but he has it topworked on his trees and was not that impressed with it this year

Named after Gary Zill's wife.  Yes, tried it a number of times but from fruit only off mother tree.  Average at best.  Definitely a pass for me.

You do crack me up.  Every mango you try seems to be classified a winner.  Is there any variety you have not liked?

Source of purple budwood?

I believe it is Gedong Gincu from Indonesia/Bali.

Dont think we are talking about the same fruit.  I believe the OP is referring to the big ole' tree from Delay Beach that Walter Zill named Apricot.  Not sure there is any other factual info available on the parent tree

Edited to correct spelling typo.

Dont know anyone propagating Cecilove other than Alex by special order. Dont know you will find any Cecilove fruit down South other than from mangomen, if they are open.

I would check Al's Fruit Trees for best selection ( it not all the way South in Homestead).

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Can’t be a Duncan, right?
« on: July 23, 2021, 04:58:21 PM »
Thanks guy. I definitely like the fruit, I’m just curious what this may be. I like eating skins but Duncan’s I can’t handle. I think achetadomestica is in the right track, it’s reminiscent of carries and Julies. It has less fiber than the julies I’ve had, and it’s more elongated, the flesh is also darker. I guess it’s a fortunate mislabel because It tastes better than Duncan’s, though my kids like Duncan’s mild flavor. Thank you.

Some Duncans are definitely better than others (off the same tree in the same season, just different crop times) and I can't comment on the edibility of the skin (of any mango cause I dont eat mango skin).  I will say that not all Duncans are small.  I have seen many a large Duncans off of one if Walter's trees, weight definitely over 1lb.

That fruit doesnt look like Julie nor does the tree.  Fruit doesnt look totally like Juliette either but hard to tell 100%.  The growth habit of the Juliette is upright and moderately vigorous.

Guys, are Mallikas really mono? I have been seeing Poly seeds so far...

Yes, Mallika is mono.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Sunburst mango variety question
« on: July 23, 2021, 11:39:50 AM »
Does anyone know for sure that Sunburst is the same as Fruit Cocktail? I spoke with a grower who has tried both and he said that the fruit doesn’t even look the same. I’ve also had a Fruit Cocktail from another grower and the Sunburst from Dr Campbell and they didn’t taste the same and the Fruit Cocktail was a much larger fruit.
So from your personal experience you can consider them two different varieties.  That's probably as good as it gets, aside from genetic testing.  Even the "experts" aren't perfect, as much as I respect those guys.

What are two different varieties?

As this is one of the varieties with multiple names, unless Dr. C has given a totally different fruit the same name, we seem to be dealing with misnamed trees.  Fruit Cocktail is not a large fruit.  Its small to medium, at best.

Here is one from the mother tree.

The birds are usually more the issue than squirrels although both can be a problem (I have seen evidence of a mature tree stripped of its fruit in one day by birds.

I have a friend with a grove in Loxahatchee who uses ultrasonic repellers but it would not be good in a normal residential setting.

What is the point of this thread, especially in the "buy-sell" section?

strongest orange flavored mango is peach cobbler, that name should be changed. let it ripe to medium firm and taste it, if it is soft its gone too far.

Yes!  Its a super tangerine flavor.  I like its original nickname, "Oh Too" which is a spin off its 0-2 number.
Do you agree with the ripening procedure? If so this is useful to me. I have had 3 and probably let them go over ripe. Tasted yuck

Not sure what you mean by the "ripening procedure."  Do you mean by knowing when to pick due to the almost complete lack of color change?  I wouldn't let them get soft on the tree.  You do have to figure out the best stage to pick and then let it ripen off the tree.  If done right, they are fabulous.
I guess what I meant is if I buy one hopefully the person who picked it knew what they were doing. When I take it home and  let it ripen to be a little soft to the touch or still firm to the touch. Other than being unprecocious it sounds like a must have mango.
On day eight our orange sherbet were spectacular. I feel confident enough to pick some more :)
Thanks for your guidance. I should probably post some pics of my sweet tart they haven't changed much for weeks not much yellow

Yes, should be a little soft to the touch but be careful, it goes to too soft/ripe quickly once it starts to soften.

Count yourself lucky if the squirrels arent getting to your Sweet Tarts.

I tried a Sophie Fry at tropical acres this year.  It was a small fruit and completely golden yellow in color.  It tasted like a toned down Carrie, a less intense flavored Carrie.  I can definitely see how Carrie was a seedling of Sophie Fry.
Thank you for that description.
Sounds like something I definitely would like.
Hopefully it is more vigorous than Julie

I would rethink this decision.   There is a reason why its not propagated nor widely available (not even at Walter's).  There are far far vetter varieties to plant.
