Tropical Fruit Discussion / Fruit Hunting in Africa - Where to go?
« on: April 25, 2017, 09:45:28 AM »
Well... I'm planning a trip for the winter and thinking of going somewhere in Africa. Its such a huge continent and I don't know where to start.
Does anyone know of any countries that are especially interesting for fruit? Preferably one that is safe and not too expensive :)
I will have 3-4 weeks, so I was thinking of stopping in one country in Eastern Africa and then flying to Madagascar to see the Ave of Baobabs and then maybe flying out to the Seychelles if I get a lead on tracking down a Coco de mer. (any tips?)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Where to hunt for fruit in California?
« on: November 15, 2016, 01:09:52 PM »
Hey guys!

I'm planning a trip to hunt for fruit (not plants/seeds) in CA and am looking for good markets, nurseries, gardens, foraging spots, and friends who don't mind sharing. Will most likely be out that way in January at some point. Any suggestions on good places to look?

This is all for my youtube series, where I'm documenting every edible fruit I can find. So I'm specifically trying to find rare fruit that I have never tried before, doesn't need to be especially good tasting.  ::)

This surprisingly was controversial. Lots of people are saying it does taste like chocolate. I'm starting to think its just hype and psychology that makes people think that. Am I wrong?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Are Gros Michel bananas eaten green?
« on: February 08, 2016, 05:18:32 AM »
So I'm confused and in Borneo. I've heard that gros michel bananas are called "pisang embun" in Malay. So I went to a market and asked. I was shown a hand of thin Green bananas. I asked the old lady selling them if she had any ripe yellow ones and she literally started pointing at me and laughing hysterically. She then called over several other vendors to join in in humiliating me. Another vendor explained that you eat these bananas green.

I'm confused. Is this actually a gros michel? I've never heard of them being eaten green, but have been hearing that they can be and its the preference in Malaysia to do so and I've heard that these are related but not true gros michel bananas. Any ideas what the reality is here?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Where to find fruit in Borneo & Japan?
« on: January 15, 2016, 02:18:15 PM »
Hey guys,

Its that time again, I'm heading out in two weeks for some fruit hunting in Asia! I'll be spending February traveling through Borneo, mostly in Sabah and Sarawak but I can pop over to Kalimantan Indonesia if there's something especially interesting to see. After Borneo I'll be traveling top to bottom in Japan for all of March.

So any suggestions on markets, parks, conservatories, private collections, foraging tours, etc.. where I can try fresh fruit to try? I will be reviewing all this for my videos, hoping to find a lot of new things to try!

I admittedly don't know much about mangoes, so I decided to try to expand my horizons a bit and try some of the less common varieties available in SE Asia. This video covers the Apple Mango and another variety that I don't know the name of. If anyone can ID it from watching, please let me know!

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Fruit hunting in Iowa?
« on: August 22, 2015, 01:13:57 PM »
Mid September I'll be coming to Iowa for work. Anyone know of anyone growing anything interesting or any markets to check out? I'll have a car and a lot of free time, so anywhere within a few hours of the Des Moines area is fair game for me. I'm excited about tracking some pawpaws if anyone knows a good place, but other uncommon fruit would also be great!

I just finished my 100th episode for my fruit hunting youtube series. I put a lot into this one, so I thought you all might like to take a look.
I normally don't post about my videos on here, since its a weekly series and I don't want to bombard the forum. If its not in the guidelines to have this post at all, let me know and I'll take it down, put on a dunce cap and never do it again.  :P

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Fruit in Egypt?
« on: August 06, 2015, 12:24:42 PM »
Hey guys!

I'm planning another grand adventure this winter and hope to do some fruit hunting for my youtube series while I'm traveling.
I most likely will be going to Borneo and Egypt (provided things are safe when I go). Anyone have any tips on good markets, farms, rare fruits, etc to look out for?... I already have some ideas on Borneo, but Egypt is still a mystery to me.

In other news, I'm about to reach my 100th episode on my series, if you haven't seen my channel check it out! https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChsbD6Clp-ZPqKwXJR3V7DQ

Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Heading to S Florida and.. Bangkok!
« on: November 14, 2014, 12:25:01 PM »
Hey guys,

I'm off to South Florida in a few days and am hoping to try some new fruits for my vlog. I'm planning on visiting The fruit and spice park, Robert is Here and maybe hit some vendors. If anyone here has anything interesting on offer or some leads I would love to hear it and would be happy to buy some fruits off you.

Also will be heading to Bangkok in a couple weeks and will be hunting around there as well if you have any suggestions of good markets/farms to visit.

Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Bletting Quince?
« on: September 25, 2014, 09:41:29 AM »
I bought a quince and thought I may try bletting it so I can see what the uncooked fruit tastes like. I've looked online and haven't found any specific information to do it. Some sources say to leave it out on the counter, others say put it outside on a cold day (its not especially cold right now), and others say freeze and defrost it. Does anyone here have any experience with this and would know the best way to go about it?
