Guava
« on: June 20, 2016, 05:52:18 PM »
One of my  guava trees has leaves with motled red coloured patches. Is this  problem result of a Pest ? a  Disease ? or a nutrition problem?
How could I remedy this in my plant ?   I have other guava trees with normal green leaves.

Have you sprayed with anything recently?

I accidentally caused the exact symptom after spraying with a too rich mixture of horticultural oil.

It could just be cold damage. I know it's winter in the southern hemisphere; are you in a relatively cool area of Brazil? My trees sometimes get red spots on the leaves in winter but it doesn't kill the tree or anything.

In response to questions posted: I have never sprayed my guavas with a liquid fertilizer or fungicide. I live in northeast of Brazil where the climate is warm all through  the year. Interesting fact is that this mottling has affected on part of the tree.  On examining my other guavas I noted that I have one more small  tree completely with this problem (i.e. all leaves affected with no green colour)

Hi,

analyzing the photos, these symptoms are caused by this nematode.

Nematóide da galha – Meloidogyne enterolobii

I think you should wait new growth to know the real plant-damage..

Nelesedulis-  If it is a nematode how could I get rid of these?  How could I identify them ?
Delvi83 - There is no growth in the affected branches.

I am attaching an additional image

try worm tea, or compost tea, mulch...
beneficial micro-organisms can outcompete the bad guys.
chitin (crab shell) and sesame oil supposedly help too.

plant mustard and marigolds helps in the long term
i use mustard as mulch and it helped a lot !

if you have a microscope, you can pull a soil sample from near the roots
there are several types of nematodes, but they have different mouth parts
you can ID them from that...

prepare a soil sample and using the microscope.

Delvi 83:  I live in a very tropical area. I have many guava trees but only 2-3 show this mottling in their braches. If I leave the branches as they are, there is no new growth in these branches. It is my impression that this  problem stunts growth.
Greenman62: Thank you for your valuable hints in trying to identify nematodes and get rid of them ! Valuable info
I need to confirm by opinion of experts and examination  in loco that it is nematode infection.
