Rising lime prices because of shortage
« on: May 15, 2014, 11:34:28 AM »
Citrus prices seem to be going up a lot as of lately. This article talks about the lime shortage; http://www.thewire.com/business/2014/05/heres-how-the-lime-shortage-is-affecting-bars-across-america/362049/

More motivation to grow your own citrus.
Grow mainly fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

Maybe not rich, unless you own a successful large acre citrus operation... However, I believe hobbyist can make some nice extra side money. Also gain favor between family and friends growing citrus.

Make friends with the local bar and bring some limes in for some free drinks :).

Hmm looks like the trees on my shortlist might be getting pulled sooner than expected. I actually don't have a normal lime tree, just Key lime. Now which underperforming tree gets the boot....

What the hell, the drug cartels calling themselves "The Knights Templar"??  The real Knight Templar should take offense to that...read the last sentence of the story.

I have a large in ground Bearss Lime tree.  Bearss limes could be used in a pinch, but bar tenders prefer Key Limes, also commonly known as bartender's limes;. - Millet

Bearss Lime is a Persian Lime, the most common lime used by bars and U.S. household.

They've been talking about the lime shortage for a couple of weeks and predicting huge price jumps but so far out here in my section of the east coast the prices are only slightly higher than before.

I have plenty of friends that tease me about all the time and effort I put into my citrus collection and greenhouse - but in the middle of the winter, when invited to a last minute dinner party and I show up with a basket of lemons, limes, blood oranges, etc - it shuts all the teasing down.

I not worried about the price of limes.  I have a large in ground lime tree, that produces way more fruit then my wife and I can ever use.  The extra fruit that we can't use are juiced and frozen in ice cube trays. - Millet

Exactly. Make some cash or do trades. Maybe a neighbor can weld something for you. You can trade this for 25-30 limes he can pick up in the next 30 days. When limes are expensive he will jump at it!

My two big and one dwarf Tahitians produce masses of fruit year 'round and they are dropping everywhere. I can't give them away fast enough. Maybe I should mail them to the US and solve the lime deficit crisis.

The big surprise with Thailand is that Tahitian limes and even improved Mexicans are not grown just the smallest seediest Mexicans (really should be called Thai lime).
How are things in Bangkok by the way? I am saddened to see the anti-democracy yellow shirts/royalist and military are now in control and pushing for  North Korean style political structure.
