Tropical Fruit Discussion / SoCal LZ and NDM update 2021
« on: July 12, 2021, 11:50:36 AM »
I would like to share a few pictures of my LZ and NDM from zone 9b. We get low 50s sometimes until end of April or early May, so my mangoes are always late to ripe. Other mango growers of SoCal, please share you pictures. Both LZ and NDM are in rootmaker panel with open bottom. I had to plant them really closely due to space limitations and currently growing over 40 varieties of mangoes and other sub tropicals . Happy gardening!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / SoCal mango growers with very late mangoes
« on: October 03, 2020, 12:14:14 PM »
My mango season is usually late but this year in particular most mangoes are still green and hanging. Only cat Saigon, buttercream, orange sherbet and Pickering ripened around August and September. I would like to know if others have the same late ripening issues. Are you guys picking the fruits so the trees can grow a little before winter hits?

Sweet tarts are still green.

CAC is still green.

LZ still green.

Peach cobblers still green.

Maha flowering and fruiting again.

Has anyone used Wesco drum truck to move 25 gal and larger pots? I am planning to buy it and wondering if anyone has first hand experience with the hand truck. I have limited clearance between pergolas so wider than 30” truck won’t work in my backyard.

Wesco 240001 Deluxe Series Steel Drum Truck, Moldon Rubber Wheels, 1000-lb. Load Capacity, 24" Width x 58" Height x 21" Depth https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000OJGSNK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_uwYdFb6BRHGQF

Thanks.

I ordered a 7 gal coconut cream from Jim Barrett’s nursery after reading some good reviews about the nursery here. I received the CC yesterday with some serious bark damages which looked gummosis to me. I am afraid this CC will die of a slow death. I never thought a nursery or someone could ship a diseased tree across the country knowingly. I sent these pic to the nursery and waiting for their response. I paid with PayPal and there is some hope in recovering payment if the nursery is reluctant to ship a healthy tree. I saved the box so it could be shipped back. Does the tree have a chance to be healthy and survive down the road?

I have learned a lot from this forum, also learned from my own mistakes. After loosing numerous trees, I am at a point that my mangoes are doing well. Most of my mangoes are on Florida rootstock except for some multigrafted varieties I want on a single tree. Like this 4in1on Manilla rootstock (LZ, PPK, Juicy Peach and Maha) courtesy of Frank. Note, I am going by the fruit sizes in determining what is an early and late variety in my yard. I am in zone 9B and I do get some below 32F nights once in a while, but last year the lowest was 34.2F according to my weather station.

4in1on Manilla rootstock.

Early Varieties Orange Sherbet and Cat Saigon.

Late Varieties.
Sweet Tart and Dwarf Hawaiian on Corriente rootstock.

Icecream on Turpentine.

Lemon Zest on Turpentine.

Mallika on Turpentine.

Peach Cobbler on Turpentine.

Pickering on Turpentine.

Buttercream on Turpentine.

Carrie on Turpentine.

Some of my grafting work based on Har's top 5.

Others like Coconut Cream, PPK, Fruit Punch, Fairchild didn't flower for me this year, or aborted their fruitlets. So mangoes will grow here, don't give up!

I bought a few perennial peanuts from Pete @ greendreams to plant as ground covers for my mangoes and other sub-tropicals. Is it ok to plant them next to mangoes within the same brim, or they should be planted a few feet away from the tree?

9
I would like to buy 5 Kauai Sugarloaf pineapple slips. If you have them and willing to ship, please let me know.

Closed, found a seller.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Should I prune this ice cream bean tree?
« on: July 23, 2019, 11:26:54 PM »
This seedling has been in ground since February of this year and grown almost to 10’. It is leaning to one side due to weight probably, I staked it with 7’ t-post, but it grew past it. It is close to home so I would like to keep it below 15’ and still want to get some fruits. Should I prune it to encourage side branches?

12
I am trying to justify getting a small greenhouse due to space limitations, but can’t think of any fruit tree that I can grow in there other than growing grafted seedlings. I am in zone 9b and mangoes, lychees, and anonnas grow well  outside in the ground. Any fruit trees you would grow in a greenhouse in 9b that is about 10’ high?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Indian thornless green jujube leaves
« on: April 30, 2019, 09:46:35 PM »
Is there something wrong with my thornless green jujube? It is supposed to be evergreen, but lost ileaves after transplanting. New leaves are sprouting out now but they look dry. I remember older leaves had glossy top. Any recommendation to improve its condition? I fertilized it with bioflora 6-6-5 and use 20-20-20 plus trace elements at low settings when watering with drip emitter.

Citrus General Discussion / Leggy satsuma mandarin
« on: April 09, 2019, 09:49:22 PM »
Why is my satsuma mandarin so leggy to the point needing a support stick? Is it because of too much nitrogen fertilizer, I feed 20-20-20 with Trace elements every time I water with ez flow and drip.

15
I came across Phosgard 0-28-25 while I was at a local Crop Services Store. I read here non-nitrogen fertilizer is recommended once the fruit has set on mango trees. I bought a 2.5 gallon since it's quite far from my place and I didn't want to drive there for it. Does anyone have experience with Phosgard or similar products, and what is your application rate? Thanks in advance.

16
Pardon me if it has already been discussed. I have been reading a lot on how FL turpentine rootstock doesn't do well in California due to weather, rainfall, soil pH etc. When do they start to deteriorate? All  of my trees came from Florida, I bought them in 15 -25 gallons and planted in ground Sep/Oct of last year. Most of them flushed, growing and flowering except for 1 that is in the front of the house where soil is highly compacted. You can see how green they are in the picture below. Should I be worried and is there a remedy?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Just pollinated my first Cherimoya flower
« on: January 29, 2019, 09:20:39 PM »
I just pollinated my first Cherimoya flower. Decided to take a look after work in dark and saw the male and female flowers. Tree is about 3 months in ground from a 15 gallon pot and about 12' tall. Not counting on it to form fruit since we still have some rainy cold days ahead till the end of February, but excited for springtime bloom.

19
I need help grafting Lapin cherry on Bing for pollination, I would compensate whatever the fare amount is. Please have some successful grafting experience. I am not sure when is the best time to graft stone fruits, so throwing it out there.  I am hoping same person will be able to show how to graft mango trees also. I am in Highland, CA 92346.

Thanks.

How much liquid soluble 10-30-20 fertilizer to add to EZ-Flo 1.5 gallon (EZ-001-CX)? I looked everywhere but wasn't able to find a definitive answer or a formula.  I plan to premix the fertilizer in 1.5 gallon of water and then add to EZ-Flo. EZ-Flo is set to slow setting which is 15000:1 feed rate. I am planning to micro fertilize every time I water. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Here are some picture of the unit.

I planted 8 trees (6 various mango varieties, longan, mauritious and sweetheart lychee trees) on south side of my backyard a few weeks ago (9/10-9/15 to be exact). Planted more on the other side of my property as well. All trees are doing fine, I added 6-12" of mulch and layer of cedar on top. I am planning to install a drip irrigation system and use Dosatron D25RE2 to fertilize. I am torn between water soluble fertilizer and  hydrolyzed fish fertilizer from Aqua Power my local Crop Services Store recommended. I was thinking of an all-in-one fertilizer and leaning towards hydrolyzed fish. Do you guys have suggestions and advice for me?

Thanks.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Help identifying the worms (?)
« on: October 04, 2018, 06:19:14 PM »

I found these critters with an orange essence I ordered from plantogram. Are these beneficial or detrimental to the trees? I haven’t seen these locally before.

Thanks.
