Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Jambu wax apple in trouble?
« on: January 06, 2018, 01:42:25 PM »
Thanks for everyone’s input. Maybe it was because I forgot to take off the frost blanket for a couple days? Who knows. I guess these trees are more resilient than I thought. Hope it will pull through! Haven’t had jambu wax apples in several years and would love to finally taste some again this year!!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Jambu wax apple in trouble?
« on: January 04, 2018, 07:46:23 PM »
I planted a little wax apple tree last summer. I live in SoCal zone 10a and it’s been a little cold here lately. Sometimes to 40s at night so I covered it with a frost blanket just in case but I just discovered that the leaves look strangely spotted...anyone have an idea what this is due to?! It was having really nice growth this past fall. I hope it’s not dying!

I just bought a “dwarf hybrid”avocado from
Home Depot. Then I noticed on my way home that it was actually grown from a seed as the bottom had a split open pit where the stem came out. What are my chances of having gotten one that actually will fruit? I’ve been waiting to get my hands on a GEM avocado for the past half a year but still haven’t gotten lucky so I caved today when I saw it...now hoping I won’t refret growing this thing!

You guys...is this what I think it is?!? It's my first year growing my cuttings and this Haley comet already had a beautiful flower and now looks like a fruit is starting to form?! I'm so so excited! :)
Do I need to do anything special at this time? More or less watering?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Jujube splitting

So most of my jujubes are growing ok and are still green at this stage but some of them have started splitting. Is this an over or underwatering issue?

It's just yellow and feels normal otherwise. I'll try some seaweed and epsom salt and a touch of miracle grow and see wht happens. It was rooted already and I planted it about 4-6 weeks ago. Most recently I feel like they've really been taking off and grew almost 6 inches in that short time. How often should I be watering it while it's growing so actively? Do they always grow so vigorously?

Guys! I didn't kill it!! For the first time in 2 months I see new growth from my Jambu wax apple tree! I'm so so excited! Not quite as exciting as fruit but I really was hoping to keep this little one alive and growing :)

I had a quick question on mine...it's been growing really well but one of them started turning yellow on the bottom cutting. Any concern with that? I try not to water more than 1-2x per week right now but it's been so hot and my worry was that they are growing so quickly that they have got to get their water from somewhere...the bottom cutting felt a little deflated.

Tropical Vegetables and Other Edibles / Re: Ginger

I had the same problem too. Got a ginger from sprouts and it finally sprouted and grew about 3 inches and then it died. I'm in SoCal and it's always super dry and windy here...do you guys think I could try my luck indoors with it?

This is a Li variety.. 3rd year in ground.. many fruits even from 1st year.. yeah there are still plenty of fruit that shrink and die.. I guess that's how it is.. the tree will know how much to keep and produce..

I water 4x (15 min) each but that's because most of my trees are on a slope.. I use the seaweed fish kelp fertilizer like Neptune Harvest and GroMore (organics).

Lots of tasty fruits soon too!!

Michsu: holy cow that's a huge collection of fruit trees you have! I hope my jujube grows that well within a few years as well. It definitely has a lot of fruit already so I'm hoping! I saw your Jambu wax apple tree in your attachment. Is it producing well for you and what do you like to use to fertilize it? That's my ultimate goal for next season...to have a few growing. I planted a little one this year but it seemed pretty stressed out after putting it into the ground.

I think underwatering or not enough roots to absorb the water you give it.
Don't worry about letting it set fruit. It won't die trying to fruit like other trees. It will abort all fruits in order to survive if you didn't water it.

My tree is 5 ft planted into the ground early this year from a 1 gallon airlayer. It's holding some fruits and aborting some. At least yours has more root to start with although planted later on.

okay thanks!. That gives me the green light to give it more water and wait for the rest of the fruit to ripen. Super excited :)

okay so if you guys had to choose between waiting to september for a GEM vs ordering a Wurtz/little cado now, which one would you do if your goal is to get good production in a container. we really do eat a lot of avocados...I don't want to have a every-other-year bearing tree.

Mark, that's great information you posted. thank you so much. I'm learning a ton from you guys. :)

I actually stopped using Osmocote now that I have Nutricote because there is less waste from runoff. I use a hybrid approach with organics and chemical fertilizers and I have tons of worms and mycelium in my soil.

Simon

Got it. Thank you!

I have a couple of jujube trees. The Li i had started to drop fruit, and the fruit was shriveling prematurely. Someone on here mentioned that because my tree was in a nursery plastic pot, and it was really hot out, the roots were likely being burned. I switched trees to a fabric pot. Moral of that story, the tree lost all its fruit, but it is doing much better overall now, and it has some fruit coming in new. Jujubes are sensitive to root rot, but i notice they are pretty thristy when they are fruiting.

How do you notice them being thirsty? Sorry honest question. I can't tell yet whether I'm over or underwatering and we have totally clay soil so I'm always worried about watering them too much

I like Osmocot especially their Plus. I hope the Temperature controlled stuff will give my plants more nutrients in our Summers, pretty much the only season it's warm enough for vegetative growth in Mangos, in my yard at least. It's still in the high fifties or low sixties at night. I recently pruned off some mango fruit when we had day temps of 90F but the cold nights are stimulating secondary blooms. I need a way to maximize Summer growth.

Simon

Simon, do you worry that Osmocot will "kill your soil" at all? Is it like miracle grow that's mostly synthetic and will damage the microbiome of your soil or make your soil less likely to hold on to water eventually? Or is it okay as long as you amend with compost every once in a while?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / jujube fruit shriveling prematurely
« on: June 29, 2017, 12:55:26 PM »
I got a jujube tree (Li variety) from a nursery and planted into the ground in May. It's not very bushy yet and about 7 feet tall. I gave it a good prune and tried really hard to pick off most of the fruit in the beginning so I wouldn't stress out the tree in its first year but that thing just kept putting out more and more flowers and it became hard to keep up with it. My question is, it's got a mix of a bunch of bigger size fruit that's green and growing well but also a whole bunch of tiny fruits that dried out and became red. Is this perhaps a sign of underwatering the tree? Underfertilizing? The leaves all look beautiful and green...

What about Gwen?

Highly recommended, IF, you can find it.  Am growing it and it's holding a lot of fruit.  It's Will Brokaw's fave if that tells you anything.  It's a very small tree that tends to over produce.  Quality of fruit is better than Hass if left to hang.  Tree has very little vigor, being the smallest (and weakest) of about 8 varieties I'm growing.  It's about 5 years old and no more than 5W X 5H', perhaps less.

I also have Holiday.  New grafted cocktail tree with 3 others but it seems to be really nice in growth habit and fruiting.  Highly recommended by all.

You can source the budwood like I did on 100's of varieties trees from U.C.R., Dr. Mary Lu Arpaia's clan.

June 11 fruit

So since you think it's the "weakest" one out of all your trees, does it make it a difficult one to grow?

I think that he meant Gwen (not gem) was better than hass.

I meant Gwen which can't hold a candle to Hass or Gem

Good to know! Thanks for the heads up. Do you really find that the Hass only fruits every other year?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / GEM avocados
« on: June 28, 2017, 12:01:05 AM »
Hey everyone! I live in SoCal and want to grow a dwarf
Avocado tree. I've been doing some
Searching and supposedly the GEM avocado
Seems like a great one, especially because it bears fruit every year as opposed to the Hass. Does anyone know where I can buy that tree? Dwarf avos seem to be really hard to find right now for whatever reason. Is it too late in the season maybe?
Any other dwarf you recommend for zone 10a?

The fruit that forms is still an S8 but any plant produced from the seed of that particular fruit is going to be different from the parent, a hybrid . It will be a totally new variety! It may look, taste and seem exactly the same as its parent or it could be something completely different, but it is definitely not the same. This is how newer, sometimes better varieties are created!
If you grow a plant from the seeds of that fruit, you can name it after yourself as it's a totally new variety.
Hope this helps.

ohhhh I see. thank you so much! :)

@RobPatterson: so you're saying to cross pollinate for example your S8 with pollen from American beauties? is the fruit that then forms a new variety or still considered S8? Sorry...confused but totally wanting to learn!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / soil analysis
« on: June 16, 2017, 08:21:42 PM »
How accurate are the home kits for soil analysis? I recently tested both my veggie bed which was a potting soil/compost/touch of peat moss mix (supplied by my landscaper...who knows what quality he got) and also my native soil where all my fruit trees are sitting in. My native soil is a total clay soil. Veggie bed came back totally nitrogen and phosphorous depleted whereas my clay soil seemed fine in everything except for of course that it's unfortunately not draining very well. Do you guys trust the home kits or send out for professional analysis?
