Coconut opener
« on: January 08, 2020, 04:23:01 AM »
Hi-Just had the coconut collector at the house
Sends his monkey up the tree while his wife opens and de-husks the coconut
They had a really effective tool to do the opening,do thought I'd share
They had it made from regular re-bar

Can you show how it works?
I use hole saw & cordless drill in sink, pour liquid in bowl filtered & scoop jelly out with spoon.
Easier to keep my fingers attached to hands heh.

This is my preferred coconut opening tool:https://www.amazon.com/dp/B017Z7AZ6Y/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_PQCfEbRTVYTF4

It’s great for getting the water but then you still need to use a machete or cleaver to open the coconut for the jelly.

The video link from pine island shows how its made and used
Man-it works great.      Fast and easy  opener
Additional advantage is the whole husk, useful for planting orchids  and vanilla vines.

but wonder how the tool works with green coconut??? I just chop the pointed top off with a heavy knife holding the nut on on hand and knife with the strong hand, to expose about 2 to 3" hard shell, then crack the shell with the same knife 90* corner and pry it open.

wonder how he taught the monkey to not select the very young nuts.

I hope he treated it well. The poor thing must have his hands and legs so strong from climbing. When I was a teen I had climbed a tall coconut tree like this, one or twice. The scary part was when transitioning from the round trunk up to the top umbrella. So dangerous.

Did the monkey jump from tree to tree with the leash on its neck? What the hell.

That is a cool tool he has. The quickest way I have seen is like the way they do it in the video I attached the link to. It would be good to try that tool vs the upside down star picket / sharp metal rod technique in a competition.

I had a boston terrier that used the teeth technique.I like the look of the pick or sharpe rod but I think I'd use leather gloves.

That video had some quick coconut huskers... Looks like something to try sometime.

I'm a risky guy and I have used table saws and miter saws. I prefer the miter saw as the table saw occasionally shoots the coconut at your body while your sawing it. The miter saw rotation sends the coconut into the metal away from you (unless your sawing real funky). Of course it's possible to cut through the husk and coconut without it being caught by the blade.... Then it again it's possible to have an extra nut added to the groin...   ;D

I suppose we should clarify the difference between dehusking a coconut and opening a coconut. The tool is a great dehusker as mentioned by bbudd in the original post. The video from pine islander shows how it works. I wonder if they sell the tool anywhere?

Another item which needs to be specified  is if  you are looking for a coconut opener for a green (tender) coconut  to consume the water and white  soft  matter - for this a hole saw attached to an eletric drill does the job in a simple way.  To open a dried coconut you need to dehusk it first - then crack with a machete and use a grater to remove the white matter. You get hand graters in form of a spoon  and graters you can attach to a motor or eletric drill. If interested I will be glad to send details. There are several  coconut dehusking gadgets described in You Tube.
