Tropical Fruit Discussion / Gauvas in Season
« on: September 23, 2012, 07:28:57 PM »
It started in late Aug. with my Tropical Pink and now I have 3 to 4 varieties dropping. The first TP were horrible but they are getting better. We don't put any to waste we either juice them or make guava marmalade, paste or shells. Here are pics of the different varieties and homemade marmalade. BTW, you eat this with cream cheese, queso fresco or you can put it in plain yogurt......absolutely delicious!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Pickering Mango and Concha Picuda Chirimoya
« on: September 15, 2012, 05:39:07 PM »
Had our first Pickering mango. Taste wise, pretty close to the ones in Florida. Had a more subtle coconut after taste but a bit sweeter than the ones from Florida - 8 out 10. Concha Picuda Chirimoya, per contra, a bit disappointing. Fair texture but bitter near the skin. Taste a bit like a sugar apple with less seeds..... the flesh was segmented and chewy - 3 out of 10.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Lisa Atemoya
« on: September 12, 2012, 09:18:26 PM »
I got my Lisa to fruit for the first time this year after hand pollination.. So far, the tree does not seem to be precocious, I had only 20 flowers. I notice that my friend's Lisa did not have many fruits last year. I have a few questions: Does Lisa have a the reputation of being a shy bearer? How long does it take before the fruit turn completely pink? here are pics of some fruits with shades of pink.

« on: September 08, 2012, 12:17:44 AM »
I've had about 12 mangos drop this week. The Glenn's are delicious but I've been surprise on how much the Ataufo's have improved in taste. Last week I found a cluster of Corriente mangos inside the canopy, I forgot about these.

Are you growing Soursop in your area? If so, has it fruited and how do you protect it when the temp drops below 50F?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Follow up on my multi-graft experiment
« on: July 25, 2012, 10:34:25 PM »

Here are pics of my grafts that I preformed on April to my 2 mature grafted cherimoya tress, One is a Pierce and the other a Booth. Initially I had 17 grafts and later in the month I added 26. I had 20 take but the tress are growing and branching out of control. Some of the grafts that took were smothered by the new growth. I'm not too happy with the results. I will never performed multi-grafts a cherimoyas.

the leaves fell off this one but it keeps flowering

this one being smother I don't know if it will survive,

sugar apples are slower and hanging on.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / pics of grafted Mamey in the Yucatan
« on: June 12, 2012, 03:19:28 PM »
Here is a Mamey I bought in Hunucma for $2.50 and that's expensive because I didn't want to go to the Ayuntamento were the fruit trees (many grafted) are FREE to all residents. It looks like they used an Omega grafting tool and decapitated the scion. What do the experts think? The kid that sold it to me didn't know anything about grafting.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cherimoya lovers of Socal....
« on: June 03, 2012, 11:40:28 PM »
it's that time of year to hand pollinate your annonas. You can collect pollen from any of your annonas (cherimoya, atemoya, sugar apple, custard apple). The best time to collect and hand pollinate is at dusk. If you only have one annona tree collect your pollen put it away in the fridge and pollinate the next day. Here are some pics to help you.

all the branches are new growth from a few weeks. I prune them when I received them from Hawaii in March.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Grafting Mamey (Pouteria sapota)
« on: April 10, 2012, 12:10:37 AM »
JF, there is good info on this book. Maybe we can use the most effective method to graft our Mameys according to the book. Nice find murahilin.

I read capitulo nueve *propagacion vegetativa* that's interesting stuff but Greg got great instructions from Frankies on how to graft a Mamey. I believe both seedlings he grafted are pushing so I'm going to stick with Frankies instructions.

I pruned my cherimoya trees down to 7 feet and since I feel confidence with my grafting techniques, thanks to Greg and C7, I went ahead and multi-grafted my trees. Here are the varieties I grafted and hope they will take. I like to hear the opinions of the master grafters of the forum. Will this work? what are my chances of these graft taking?

Now, this one is from my tree. I had two drop and they are a lot better tasting than the ones I had in late Jan.......It taste a little bit like Pierce which I dubbed the *Dulce de leche Chirimoya* because of the heavy texture taste like condensed milk. It's not that sweet but you can taste the sugar apple in it which I like.

here next to a Pierce and White Cherimoya
