When is the best time to repot Jaboticaba and ID
« on: April 30, 2020, 06:55:31 PM »
I picked up a 7 gal Jaboticaba tree from Mimosa.  I want to repot it to a 15 gal.

When is the best time to repot Jaboticaba?

Thanks,
Al

Nice specimen. Now is a good time. Its not fruiting.
(p.s. Just a unsolicited recap for red jabos likes: acidic, moist soil. They easily get fertilizer burn with high N ferts (use HollyTone), mines don't like full direct sun.)

No where to plant it ...but at least I got it. ;)

Stuff you get from local nurseries like mimosa is usually Sabara variety.

Nice looking tree - I just bought some similar ones from Champa. Almost everything you see here in jabo form is Sabara. Those are certainly the same.

How much did you pay if you don't mind my asking?

I bought a 3 gallon for $60 and a 15 gallon for $120 just now.

I brought 2, 7gal is 90 and 15gal is 120.  The 7 gal trunk is 3.5in and the 15gal 4in.  If I understand correctly, the 7gal is 7 years old and the 15 is 8 years old tree.

They look like red jabos to me?
Sabara have smaller leaves

If it is red, I should get some fruit pretty soon with it.  Sabara takes longer time than red to fruit.  If this tree is 8 years old, I can get some fruit next year.  Finger crossed.  😄😄

I live near mimosa and champa nursery and I am looking for a hybrid red jaboticaba or any jaboticaba that will start fruiting earlier. I do not want a sabara variety since I want one that will start fruiting earlier and I can keep a compact size and still give fruit.  If I go to mimosa to pick out a tree how can I tell if its a hybrid red or a sabara variety? The people that work there are usually not very helpful.

I checked the nursery around here, they are all sabara not red.  Either you buy some seeds and germinate by yourself or ask the forum members here to see they are willing to sell one to you.

Champa nursery has some chunky and peeling Sabara for $275 - some almost 6' tall and are in 20 gallon pots. They are probably only 2-3 years from fruiting if you treat them well. I bought on of their sale 15 gallons for $120, and wager it's probably 4-5 years before that size fruits.

Unfortunately with slow growers, you're paying for time.

I just went to papaya tree nursery yesterday. They have 2 sabara in the ground, about 12-15 ft tall, loaded with fruit.
The guy, Alex, really knows his stuff. He told me it is only a myth that jabo does not like alkaline water. He uses municipal water only to water all his trees. No soil acidifier or special fertilizer needed either. His Jabos bear fruit several times a year. Of course they are like 15 years old, but I have a 7 gallon and he said it should start bear fruit in 3 more years. The only special thing I notice is, his Jabos are surrounded by pots and pots of plants, so it is kind of creating a micro climate environment. Btw, it is located on Granada Hills which is really hot and dry.
