Prainea limpato Seedlings
« on: February 12, 2013, 09:52:35 PM »
hi there
I planted P.limpato seeds on peat based soil.
and few days later, germination has started.

So far so good,
But few seedlings gone to brown and rotting growing point, and leaves didn't open easily
i am wondering what is the cause.

cultivation environment
Mild Acidly Soil (peat base)
Air Temperature 23-29℃(72-83°F)
Soil Temperature 25.5-30℃(77 °F-86 °F)
Air Humidity 70-80%
Soil Humidity always moist
Lighting with Metal Halide Lamp
in mini green house

thanks

Under the tree in the park, the seedlings look healthy, however in planting bags under a mango tree at my house, they have all died.  They died in a strange way, with the leaves rotting rather than drying out and falling off.

Probably don't wet a seedling with water directly.

Maybe a fungal problem like "damping off"?  You might try a fungicide or just try to grow them as dry as possible to inhibit fungus (that can be tricky -- too dry for fungus but wet enough for the seedlings).

I am going through the same thing with some ndea seedlings now.  One day, they look fine.  The next day, they are just gone -- not even a wilted, dead seedling is apparent.  I think I might be finally getting an upper hand with my seedlings.

Good luck with your Prainea seedlings.  I have been looking for seed for years and Red Durian just sold his last lot of seed when I was about to order.

I wonder if maybe there is a mycorrhizae that is present in the soil around the mother tree?  Maybe next time RD try mixing a little mother soil into your grow bags?  Though to be honest it does sound like fungi.

Are these plants mono or dioecious?

By the time I got mine many had rotted internally and turned to mush, but enough seedmed alive enough to hold some hope for germination. Unfortunately I stuck them in unlabelled pots next to Willughbeiea and I've got one strong spire of a shoot popping out of one pot, but not sure if its Prainea or Willughbeiea. Time will tell I guess, but it doesnt look like it will get knocked back by anything. I had a similar problem with Myrianthus I picked up fresh from NQ, with only 2 out of 15 or so surviving the rat attacks and rot.  :(

Prainea looks like an Artocarpus seedling pretty quickly and Willughbeia looks like a thin needle with little leaves, very thin for its height and straightness.  sounds like you have a Willughbeia.
