Surinam cherry : first taste
« on: October 01, 2015, 02:30:19 PM »
My surinam cherry tree produced some cherries for the first time.

Taste bland. Tasteless! :(
I thought they have some sweetness in their taste.

In my experience, the 2nd harvest, the next year, will be better, and you should wait till they fall from the tree... did you picked them from the tree?

Huertas... thank you for the good news so I can have the courage to support my tree as I can for the next year! I was disappointed with the taste
I picked them from the tree directly, they were full rippen I think. In the picture the cherries are from the tree. 3-4 of them were already on the ground so didn't collect them.

that's a luxury for me.  I'm fighting for them with the birds! they know when to raid the tree!  so I either cover the tree with a net or eat them a 1-2 days earlier than I would like.  now, we have parrots moving into our valley. ugh.

IMO surinam cherry is pretty bland; maybe slightly sweet with a resinous after taste. got some around the house that were here before I moved and I'm keeping them around in hopes of trying to make some wine with them some day. the darker berry has eluded me in the past so I planted a tree. I hope those are better than the more common red fruiting ones.

Havnt eaten alot of them but my uncle has a tree that has fair size fruit on it and if I eat those I find they taste a whole lot better by peeling the skin off the fruit. Might be hard to do with smaller fruit but when the fruit has fallen and is very soft the skin comes right off and improves the flavour heaps.

Lol that's why I love miracle fruit.

U can eat some fruits early and they still taste sweet!

I have the same problem as u...animals like to eat fruits right before they are perfectly ripe, so u have to acquire a taste for slightly green fruit!

They are so variable! There's the bad ones; average ones; good ones and if you are lucky like
me you can find the elite ones; with firm flesh, large size, sweet grosella flavor and none astringency ; I found a red one with these components, and a black one very sweet with sangria/mulberry flavor; the red ones I plant two seedlings( the trees aren't mine) but the first crop didn't got all the good caracteristics of the mother plant Im going to give them one more year to see if they improve; in the meantime I'm trying to root some cuttings with the pepsi bottle technic after 1 month they are still alive and pushing a few leaves ; so I may be successful; I guess the best is try as many as you can and pick the better  types; this big red one Im talking about is way better than any other Eugenia; jabos; and could go on par with some cherryes I'v tried....

I don't even grow the red ones as the black are so much better.   The black go through a red phase but yet unripe but to me it tastes like the ripe red.  The black continue to get better from there.

They are considered an invasive in Florida, almost every seed will come up.   They are that easy to grow.

My workload for the plant is gather, eat.  Throw seeds places they won't come up so I won''t have to pull them back up later.  Tp plant, kick small hole where you want it, drop seed, cover.

I did break down and cut it back so the fruit were closer to me.  There was a hedge in my hometown that was over fifty years old.  New buyers took it out and put in something no one notices.

I had a 600 ft hedge, I would walk along and taste each one.
the taste varied from not so good to very good
mix them together they made good wine.
I now have a 50 ft , 10 feet high hedge for a wind brake.
It did well when the temperature went below 20 degrees.
