Extreme Mango Bloom
« on: February 09, 2012, 08:05:59 PM »
A couple of extreme flowering mango fotos taken today. The first is a tiny Pina Colada mango blooming in a one gallon pot. The trunk is only seven inches high!  The second one is my 6 yr old Pin Saen Mun (PSM) that is overloaded with bloom.

That was Noel that posted that, not me.  For the record I have not tried Pina Colada.  Pim Saen Mun is good for eating green and only mediocre as a fully ripened mango.  So, in aner to your question,.......no.

That graft was done by Master Grafter Jeff Hagen. The man is a true artisan! By the way, I think PSM is a very good mango. Could be that they taste different in my sandy soil that in Harry's soil. They are probably one of the sweetest mangos when ripe. Taste like sugar.

But it's a fact that fruits taste different depending on the local conditions. I am sure that some fruits taste better growing in Harry's soil than in mine and vice-versa. That's why you can't judge a fruit from one location. Even from season to season they can taste different even on the same tree. I have struggled with Jaboticaba in my soil while my buddy in nearby Parkland grows them in Everglades muck soil does fantastically with them.

I thought Pin Saen Mun were supposed to grow upright in habit. Yours is a low rider PSM...low and loaded.  Here is a PSM I just planted (another Jeff Hagen graft) front of my air conditioner to beautify it. The town requested people  plant shrubs or decorative fences so A/C units are not street visible

Well, when I said mediocre, I was referring to as compared to other mangoes in my yard.  Since I have only planted out mango cutivars that some person of reasonable mango repute thought was excellent,  the mediocre moniker doesn't equal a bad mango.  Neither does it mean I didn't like it.  It is a typical SE Asian flavored mango.....sweet with no real complexity.  It is more superlative as a green eating mango for those that like mangoes that way.  It is especially good for cooking while green.  My Trinidadian neighbores use this mango to make a cooked spiced mango dish I think they call Anchar or something like that.  It is one of my all time favorite ways to enjoy mangoes.

HAHAHAHA I like the PSM 'shrub' to cover the A/C :-)

The PSM is an incredibly beautiful mango tree. It has a fantastic, symmetrically rounded canopy and dark green leaves. Under normal growing conditions, Noel's tree would be much bigger. But, he prunes it to keep it small.

As for flavor, I really like the mangoes from Noel's PSM tree. My wife puts it in her top 5, with Lemon Zest and Okrung being her two favorites.

The PSM is a mango that really appeals to foreigners (eg, hispanics and islanders). Unlike the American palate, which craves sweet and tart, the foreigner much prefers a fruit that has much less of a tart component. Being that my wife is from Central America, I've grown to appreciate that end of the fruit spectrum.

interesting that everyone is describing psm as very sweet- my recollection of the one I at at Noel's house was that it did have an acid component. maybe it was a little underipe? either way, I enjoyed it. Now if I could just get my psm tree to put ona flush- it has only had one flush in 18 months despite looking like its in excellent health

JH--Your grafted PSM is nicely budding and will graduate from shrub to tree very soon ...... Then I'll have to make sure tree sheddings don't clog up the A/C coils. But should not be a big issue to keep on top of.

I guess it depends on who is doing the tasting :-). If we exclusively invited my wife's friends over for a mango tasting, the results would be inverted :-). What's 'good' varies fairly dramatically depending on culture.

Noel, can you imagine if the Piņa Colada holds a fruit?  :D I tried the Pim Saen Mun once and it was a nice, fiberless and sweet mango.  That was a good idea for covering the A/C!!
