I have not had any bad experiences with rarepalmseeds.com I have ordered palms, cycads, trees and some fruit over a number of years.

Germination has varied some over 90% some50% some 10 and some zero but overall I have been pretty happy with them. They even refunded me once when the germinated seeds were clearly not what I bought. I took a photos of the seedlings and they credited my card.

Given the huge variety of seeds they offer I think they do well.

Uganda has the best tasting Avocados for only about 15c  a fruit (and some are quite large too).

Having got the Jaboticaba bug from someone recently I have been looking at all the information on-line. Most of it is either too basic or I get lost in the myriad of different varieties.

I was just wondering how the following compare in terms of flavour, fruit size, fruit quality and speed of growth from seed general ease of cultivation and flood and drought resistance.

1. Red hybrid Jaboticaba, Plinia cauliflora
2. Blue Jaboticaba, Myrciarria vexato
3. Escarlette Jabaoticaba (Plinia cauliflora x aureana) x aureana Is that correct?
4. Grimal Myrciaria spirito-santensis
5. White Jaboticaba Myrciaria aureana
6. Sabara, Myrciaria cauliflora variety

Any help would be appreciated!

I have noticed that both R. probus and R. glauca are in Stock with trade wind fruit.

R. rosifolius tastes like a milder version of R. probus (itself tasting like a milder version of domestic red raspberry), but where both are softer than domestic types, R. probus is juicier, and R. rosifolius is mealier. I consider it a decent berry, but it probably won't impress most folks with access to superior berries. If you can only grow one of the two, R. probus is considered superior to R. rosifolius.

Rubus niveus (Mysore Raspberry) is another tropical Bramble, with black raspberry type fruits. I haven't tasted it, so I don't know much about the flavor, but it's usually the first one people recommend.

If you like the domestic types, Caroline, Anne & Bababerry Raspberries grow well enough in the tropics, as do Domestic Black Raspberries. I'm trialling Wild Treasure & Prime Ark Freedom blackberries, and they're showing no signs of succumbing to the heat & humidity.

Thank you that is very interesting. I might try and bring back some roots of the domestic ones when I visit the US.

Hello and Merry Christmas everyone!

Anyone have experience germinating and growing Andean Raspberry, Rubus glaucous. How are the fruit? The Ferns website suggest that it tastes very good and give it four rating. Does it do well in frost free areas? We are about 3,000 feet up here in northern Uganda.

Any information much appreciated as I have just received some seeds.

Thank you everyone. I am trying Jaboticaba but I have some years to go 😳 before I get fruit. I m not very fond of Physalis. I am definitely trying the Eugenia I can get a hold of. But I would still like more 'Berry' berries if you see what I mean!

Hi everyone,

We all love blackberries, raspberrues and strawberries, but what are the best berries to grow in the subtopics and tropics. Here in northern Uganda we don't get significant cold seasons it rarely drops below 60'C or 15 F.

Currently I grow Mysore Raspberry, mulberries. Then there are berry like fruit such as Suriname Cherry and Barbados Cherry, Malpighia. Also Muntingia. But I find Muntingia disappointing as they are small with a relatively thick skin. I also find Malpighia disappointing, with little flesh and the birds eat most of them. Strawberries that I grow also have low yeilds and spoil get eaten.

Any suggestions welcome!

My seed grown Annona reticulata is fruiting for the third year and had 7 fruit. One got stollen by a neighbour kid. Now the topmost one was eaten over night by a fruit bat.

How can I stop it eating all the rest?? Any ideas appreciated.
