I have not had any bad experiences with rarepalmseeds.com I have ordered palms, cycads, trees and some fruit over a number of years.

Germination has varied some over 90% some50% some 10 and some zero but overall I have been pretty happy with them. They even refunded me once when the germinated seeds were clearly not what I bought. I took a photos of the seedlings and they credited my card.

Given the huge variety of seeds they offer I think they do well.

Wow that looks amazing!

Just saying...

Uganda has the best tasting Avocados for only about 15c  a fruit (and some are quite large too).

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Basic Jaboticaba Question
« on: April 01, 2020, 07:58:47 AM »
Having got the Jaboticaba bug from someone recently I have been looking at all the information on-line. Most of it is either too basic or I get lost in the myriad of different varieties.

I was just wondering how the following compare in terms of flavour, fruit size, fruit quality and speed of growth from seed general ease of cultivation and flood and drought resistance.

1. Red hybrid Jaboticaba, Plinia cauliflora
2. Blue Jaboticaba, Myrciarria vexato
3. Escarlette Jabaoticaba (Plinia cauliflora x aureana) x aureana Is that correct?
4. Grimal Myrciaria spirito-santensis
5. White Jaboticaba Myrciaria aureana
6. Sabara, Myrciaria cauliflora variety

Any help would be appreciated!

Do these varieties gro true to type from seed? I have Zull back hopefully flowering this year. I have never seen black star before.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Anyone growing Rubus glaucous?
« on: January 18, 2020, 04:18:48 AM »
Thank you. Do you know how this Rubus tastes? How is the yeild?

OK thank you. How does Rubus probus taste like? There is a local one I have from South Sudan but the taste is unremarkable.

I have sown my seeds and put them in the fridge for a month or so, and we will see the results in due course.

I have noticed that both R. probus and R. glauca are in Stock with trade wind fruit.

R. rosifolius tastes like a milder version of R. probus (itself tasting like a milder version of domestic red raspberry), but where both are softer than domestic types, R. probus is juicier, and R. rosifolius is mealier. I consider it a decent berry, but it probably won't impress most folks with access to superior berries. If you can only grow one of the two, R. probus is considered superior to R. rosifolius.

Rubus niveus (Mysore Raspberry) is another tropical Bramble, with black raspberry type fruits. I haven't tasted it, so I don't know much about the flavor, but it's usually the first one people recommend.

If you like the domestic types, Caroline, Anne & Bababerry Raspberries grow well enough in the tropics, as do Domestic Black Raspberries. I'm trialling Wild Treasure & Prime Ark Freedom blackberries, and they're showing no signs of succumbing to the heat & humidity.

Thank you that is very interesting. I might try and bring back some roots of the domestic ones when I visit the US.

I have a poor track record germinating Rubus, so I can't say much in that regard. But I think it could do well for you. Keep them in the shade during the hottest months, but test a few plants in full sun, to see how well they adapt. Rubus tend to be strong, hardy and vigorous plants. I think there's a population of R. glaucus in Hawaii, though I'm not fully certain.

Right now I'm growing R. probus, and have had success growing temperate climate Rubus in the worst, most neglectful conditions I could give them, with strong summer heat and full tropical sun. I haven't lost any to my climate yet. Highland tropical species might be as hardy, or they might not, but I'm decently  confident in R. glaucus.

Trade Winds Fruit has seeds on occasion, so I'm keeping my eyes out for it, to try myself.

Rubus rosifolius looks better for subtropical and tropical raspberry.

Hello and Merry Christmas everyone!

Anyone have experience germinating and growing Andean Raspberry, Rubus glaucous. How are the fruit? The Ferns website suggest that it tastes very good and give it four rating. Does it do well in frost free areas? We are about 3,000 feet up here in northern Uganda.

Any information much appreciated as I have just received some seeds.

Thank you everyone. I am trying Jaboticaba but I have some years to go 😳 before I get fruit. I m not very fond of Physalis. I am definitely trying the Eugenia I can get a hold of. But I would still like more 'Berry' berries if you see what I mean!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Best tropical berries to grow?
« on: November 16, 2019, 03:14:09 AM »
Hi everyone,

We all love blackberries, raspberrues and strawberries, but what are the best berries to grow in the subtopics and tropics. Here in northern Uganda we don't get significant cold seasons it rarely drops below 60'C or 15 F.

Currently I grow Mysore Raspberry, mulberries. Then there are berry like fruit such as Suriname Cherry and Barbados Cherry, Malpighia. Also Muntingia. But I find Muntingia disappointing as they are small with a relatively thick skin. I also find Malpighia disappointing, with little flesh and the birds eat most of them. Strawberries that I grow also have low yeilds and spoil get eaten.

Any suggestions welcome!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Trouble with fruit bats

One of those is 500km north, one is 1500km south west and carpets visit my yard. I get mostly amethyst pythons to 5.5 eating my ducks and geese. Sometimes water pythons and spotted pythons drop by. With goannas, fig parrots, lorikeets, cockatoos and insect pest as well as flying foxes and tube nosed bats Im lucky to get any fruit.

Wow you have a positive managerie in your yard!

My seed grown Annona reticulata is fruiting for the third year and had 7 fruit. One got stollen by a neighbour kid. Now the topmost one was eaten over night by a fruit bat.

How can I stop it eating all the rest?? Any ideas appreciated.
