Millaa Millaa Vine (E.triflora) of the atherton tableland is a rampant rainforest margin vine often festooned with fruit a bit over half an inch and rather similar in most respects to oscars' pictured 2 inch fruits. They taste ok with tomato flavour coming through the tang.

Oscar,

Do plan to sell seeds?  I have a goumi and also E. philippinensis, and would be interested in trying to grow this one, as well.

James

Yes emegar do plan to sell seeds of So-Shang once they start fruiting heavily. Am also selling cuttings. They are actually much easier and faster fruiting from cuttings than from seed. If interested contact me off group. Thanks.
Oscar

Have some goumi plants now as well, thanks to CoPlantNut. Will see how they compare to So Shan i guess in a couple of years. From what i've read they are very similar, just the goumi is about 3x smaller fruit.

Good news and bad news. Yes i have cuttings to sell. But will be going out of town soon. So it will have to wait a few months. Better anyway if you start them in spring. They are easy to start from cuttings.

Does anyone know if different species within the family will cross pollinate? I have Taiwan Sweet Olive, but only one, so millions of flowers but no fruit. I dont need two of the same tree but could do with an autumn olive, ceylon olive or so-shang if they would pollinate each other?

Cool stuff guys... I'm always curious about Elaeagnus fruits.

I had one in Sri Lanka that was a bit harsh in flavor (but could be a nice accent like an olive).

In Singapore I saw a large tree of one species that was fruiting with purple fruits... sadly it was way out of reach.

It is interesting that this genera has tropical and non-tropical members.  Many have a good oil content in the seed.  Also the chemistry of them is pretty interesting.  Some have high amounts of lycopene, others have high amounts of different colorants that tend to be beneficial.
What's that got to do with Jose Andres $10 brussel sprouts?

They are also the toughest things you'll ever put in the ground. No care what-so-ever.

The bad thing is that ants keep on defoliating them , i gotta try one of the leaves one day.

Judging solely by my experience with Elaeagnus multiflora, I suspect your new plant just needs 3 months to get its root system established, then it will take off.  They seem to tolerate being in pots but do much better in the ground for me, like most plants.

My guess Luc would be that it's just thirsty. It seems to grow like crazy in Hawaii where it rains all the time. Grew giant even in a small pot. When i put it in the ground it took off like wildfire.

Try giving them a good shot of potassium.

Yeaaahhh , all 3 of my So-Shang started to flower , even the last one that was still in a nursery-bag and planted in the ground maybe a year ago....
How are yours doing Soren ?
Lots of flowers so with a little luck I can also comment on the taste in ? weeks or months .

One of the plants is sending out a new shoot , 5 meters , like a water shoot in Citrus , do you remove that ?  Oscar ? Coplantnut ? Or can I use it as a cutting to start new ones .

Luc, that is how the plant grows, it is semi climbing, although has no tendrils. I keep all those long shoots pruned off, otherwise plant gets really wild. Had one growing up my electric pole. Yes you can use shoots to start new plants. Use a rooting hormone.

Colorado wind would quickly eliminate any 5 meter water shoots; so never a problem I've had with Goumi...   Mine tend to send out 1 meter shoots each year.  I do find them easy to root.
